A closer look at ... Broncos QB Jay Cutler
http://nflblogs.profootballweekly.com/Handicapping/ Each week during the NFL season, we'll try to take a detailed look at a player, coach or team from a handicapping perspective. The subject of this week's profile: Broncos QB Jay Cutler. Easily my favorite quote of this week and many weeks was Jay Cutler's response to Raiders CB DeAngelo Hall's contention that the Broncos "outschemed" the Raiders en route to a 41-14 victory on Monday night. Cutler, Denver's third-year quarterback, didn't think much of that suggestion. He noted that the Broncos played "one-on-one" football throughout. Then, this gem: "Eddie Royal beat DeAngelo Hall time after time after time," Cutler said. "That's what happened." Cutler has the strong arm and swagger we associate with the word quarterback. Both were on full display Monday, as a Broncos offense without Brandon Marshall ripped feeble Oakland. Royal, the speedy rookie from Virginia Tech, caught nine passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. But to me, the bigger story was Cutler, who was in complete control in his '08 debut. He threw only 24 times, but he completed 16 of them for 299 yards and two touchdowns. Hall was right; the Broncos' gameplan was a thing of beauty. But it is one thing to understand Mike Shanahan's offense and another to look like you were born to run it, and Cutler, 22 starts into his pro career, is starting to fit into that second category. Bettors who have backed the Broncos in Cutler's tenure have been disappointed; the Broncos have covered in only 7 of 22 of his starts. But that's hardly been his fault. Seventeen of those starts have gone Over the total, including Monday's result. That's usually a sign of a team with a good offense and a not-so-good defense. Cutler gets his fourth crack at the Chargers on Sunday. The first three matchups haven't gone so well, with San Diego romping all three times. Not surprisingly, the Chargers are 1½-point favorites at Denver. And, not so surprisingly, the Over-Under has crept up to 45½ after opening at 45. What an interesting game this could be, the 0-1 Chargers trying to get back to even against a better-than-expected opponent. Motivation won't be a problem for Cutler; recall how Chargers QB Phillip Rivers taunted Cutler in the midst of San Diego's thumping of Denver last Christmas Eve. Here is Cutler's chance to even the score — and put the Broncos two games up in the AFC West race. |

Cutler had the highest highest Yards per pass in the league last week, his rating was 2nd only to ROTH-- who only attempted 14 passes...

I'm pumped for the Charger game. It's time we take back this division. These upstarts had their chance, now it's time to restore order to the AFC West.

San Diego's defense is alot better than Oaklands. Some folks think that cromartie is the best DB in the league...his season last year was very Champ Bailey...ish. Throw in Shawn Phillips and that Dline...and they're a force to be reckoned with.
Why they didn't show up last week....I suspect has alot to do with Turner not getting them ready to play...but that won't be an issue this week. Like Shanny put it, "that team had 10 Pro-bowl players last year", "We expect to get their very best"....meaning they didn't play up to their potential against the Panthers. I agree. We need to be smart on offense and we really need to turn it up a notch on defense and in our special teams if we expect to win. I think we will! I can't wait! |

Watching the game Monday, I found myself really loving the look on Jay's face throughout. He just has that "game" face. I like on the first drive when Nate Jackson dropped the pass and Jay yelled at him "c'mon Nate!" He's developed into a real leader, a competitor, and apparently, a quote-machine.

FWIW, Cutlers been receiving across the board praise. Its been a long time since someone has doted on a Denver player like this. Pretty much all the NFLN guys, Mike & Mike,...they even cut to his news conference during sports center.

Pretty interesting reading all 8 pages of the Raiders\Broncos game thread on the Titans forum. Check it out if you are bored.
http://forums.titansonline.com/forum...ad.php?t=38557 Their perspective on Denver games in general and Cutler in particular is always interesting since the Titan posters are polarized on Jay. Some are Cutler homers, some are Anti-Cutlers. Being a Titan fan must SUCK right now. You have the same record and 1st place in your division as the Broncos...but you know that your team does not have the same leadership, execution, upside or mentality at the QB position. And your home-grown product that you COULD have drafted...is turning into a star for someone else. Some good posts in the thread like... Cutler may have the best footwork and mechanics of any young quarterback since Peyton Manning broke into the league. And his arm strength is unmeasurable. Very incredible. Funny thing is...everyone knew this coming out of college and the experts question his ability, and especially his footwork, despite the fact that he was a proven mobile quarterback with a cannon arm and canny ability to set his feet on the move. This is not about system (though it benefits him). This is not about third-year progression (though he's done it well). This is not a comparitive between the Cardinals, Titans and Broncos regarding quarterback (though that's how it always ends up). This is about a young quarterback with stud potential and playing an incredible ball game to open his third season in the league, against a pretty good traditional defense and well-known defensive coordinator who prides on adjusting and stopping big offenses. Cutler is the real deal. Watch and enjoy. and .. There is every evidence to suggest that Cutler was very sick in the final game against San Diego, and what Rivers, Merriman and his teammates pulled is nothing but bad karma for the future. If you think Shanahan run it up on the Raiders, just wait. Retribution baby. |

If we pull this Home Upset..."IT'S SHOWTIME BABY!"
We wallowed in poor drafts for years. these 06 and 08 drafts alone have jumpstarted us again! |
