JOHNSON LOOKING AT A HALF MILLION PRICE TAG TO BECOME “OCHO CINCO”?
Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2008, 2:15 p.m. EDT There have been no concrete developments in the ongoing saga of Chad Ochocinco since the NFL stepped in on Sunday and prevented the receiver formerly known as Chad Johnson from wearing a jersey sporting his new legal surname. The issue is the NFL’s contractual commitment to Reebok, and whether Johnson will pay the production costs for the unsold inventory of “C. Johnson” jerseys. Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com suggests that, for a player of Johnson’s stature, the number will be in range of $500,000. In 2007, Raiders receiver Jerry Porter was told that he couldn’t change his number from 84 to 81 without forking over $210,000 to cover the costs of unsold jerseys. Last week, rookie linebacker Keith Rivers bought the unsold inventory of jerseys with his prior number (58) so that he could change to his desired number, 55. We’re still amazed by the fact that the NFL has allowed one of its partners to contractually foist these expenses onto the league and its players. Then again, since the ultimate bill is paid by the players, maybe the league didn’t really care. One group about which no one seems to care are the folks who bought the jerseys that become worthless. Though Reebok got its money back for the Keith Rivers jerseys bearing a number that he’s no longer wearing, that kid in Georgetown who used his paper route money to buy a “Rivers 58″ is now screwed. In Johnson’s case, the irony is that his offseason antics surely prompted sales of his jersey to drop, meaning that there are more of the unsold items in stock than there would have been if he’d not launched a relentless campaign to be traded. So now the question is whether the notoriously cheap Chad Johnson will fork over the money necessary to become Chad Ocho Cinco. Meanwhile, we doubt that the supply of jerseys bearing his former name will be shrinking. |

I can see Reebok point of view on this one. It is true though no one cares about the money fans wasted, only unsold merchandise.

How about all the new ones they will sell because of the novelty?
A deal where Chad pays the difference between any spike they see in new jersey sales and the new old stock would seem to be an appropriate compromise. |

with all the crackdown on celebrations and everything, i totally agree. this game is supposed to be fun and entertaining, fining a player for having a celebration (like TO did this weekend) that wasnt even taunting the other team is total BS.

That is stupid. When a team trades a player, do they have to pay Reebok for the unsold inventory before the NFL approves the trade?
Reebox, If you dont like dealing with the unsold inventory of NFL Jerseys, then get out of your contract with the NFL and let Under Armor or Nike step in. Quit crying...and start selling Ocho Cinco jerseys...I'm betting they'll be in hot demand. |

Especially stupid since Chad will change his name back after the novelty wears off. So Reebox gets the spike for the novelty jersey, then can sell the old jerseys when he switches back.

Players have changed their last name before (religious reasons) and the NFL lets it fly. Players change their jerseys when another player comes in with the same last name (to include a first initial or first name)...that's fine too. But here Chad is doing it for marketing purposes and to anger the commish, so they are hiding behind Reebok to block it. |

This could all be solved with marketing. If they advertised those Johnson jerseys as "limited addition," and "never again to be re-printed" I guarantee they would sell almost as well as the new Ocho Cincos.

I used to think that about Chad Johnson too, until the way he acted this offseason.
That wasn't about having fun or not being a stiff, he was just being a selfish jerk who handled what should have been an internal business matter through the media. |

I smell some sort of lawsuit here. My guess is it costs Reebok $5 to make a jersey, so theres 100,000 Chad Johnsons out there for sale. They're asking at least $65/jersey for all of them. I am curious what percentage a player takes on there jersey. I'm also curious to know what kind of contract they sign with the NFL regarding their name and number.

Agreed ... but I do think Chad is a flavor-clown/jerk. And not for his on-field antics I'm fine with those.

So reebok now has more say in a players number than a player. Nice.
