Default Palin smears are turning me onto the McCain ticket...

I would have never imagined voting for McCain, but watching these "change" agents smear this woman and drag her family into their smears is troubling for me. The more negative these "change" agents go, the more inclined I find myself to spite them with my vote.

The point... to me anyway... is that Palin knew that accepting the invitation to run for VP would put her unmarried, pregnant teenage daughter (and all the rest of her family as well) into the harsh glare of publicity. Most mothers would have declined the invitation, knowing that she had that kind of vulnerability. But Palin chose to put her own ambitions ahead of the needs of her daughter. As the mother of a teenage daughter, I can't respect that at all.

Why is that angle constantly missed?

I'm all for people following their ambitions but when your youngest son is born with down syndrom and your oldest daughter is suddenly pregnant all within the last couple of months maybe its time to put the family first. JMO...

On the other hand i do agree TJ that people need to be careful how they deal with this situation. Too much in any direction could lead to a "wave" of sympathy votes.

I just can't agree with that at all. I see women as equals, and family as off limits. She has every right to accept the position of vice president without the media turning her family into a vehicle for THEIR democrat ambitions. I would be equally disgusted if they were doing the same thing to the Obama family, and in fact have been several times at the way they've painted Michelle.

Nevertheless, my problem has nothing to do with Sarah, and everything to do with the phony talk of "change." I was at one time hopeful that this might possibly be for real. Clearly it is nothing but a slogan... and I'm not talking about Obama. He's saying the right things. I'm talking about the legions... I'm disgusted by what I'm witnessing.

I think you are reading more into this than there really is... Who insinuated that women weren't equal?

Where were you with the "moral outrage" when the right-wing attack dogs were going after Chelsea Clinton?

And if something like this is enough to decide your vote (as opposed to real issues like the economy, Iraq, health care, etc.) then I guess you've finally become a full-fledged, card-carrying "values" voter.

Political muckraking is disgusting. But Sarah Palin's family needs her attention right now.... and they aren't going to get it because she has other priorities that she has chosen to place above them...

I'm sorry. I just think she should be there for her daughter right now instead of being out on the campaign trail.

I figured this would be the way the right would counterattack on the whole Palin question - I just didn't expect TJ to be leading the charge.

The DPO days seem like a hundred years ago.

Yes, they did attack Chelsea during her father's presidency. Brutally. And she was only 12 when it started.

McCain reportedly told a "joke" about Chelsea Clinton in 1998, saying: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." The late columnist Molly Ivins reported of Limbaugh:

On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, 'Did you know there's a White House dog?' Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.

When viewers objected, he claimed, in typical Limbaugh fashion, that the gag was an accident and that without his permission some technician had put up the picture of Chelsea -- which I found as disgusting as his original attempt at humor.

Just don't think it's any ones place to use this type stuff against anyone .
And seems a little unfair to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't do when it comes to family matters or their job/passion ...

If she wants to chase a dream and has the means of doing it while taking care of family responsibilities more power to her ..shes got me beat

and trust me if she was neglecting something/someone it would be on the news within the hour with video and a pie chart i'm sure ...

Where's the "moral outrage" over that?

Ask a rightie, and he'll flip the script on you with "all is fair in politics - if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" in a heartbeat.

I'm sorry, TJ, but I'm not at all with you on this one. With the direction of American politics over the last 20 years, nobody at all should be surprised that every skeleton in the closet will be dragged out and aired in full publicity. If anything, this further shows the weakness of McCain's judgement in choosing Palin. Why on earth would he choose someone with so many potential skeletons to drag into the light of day, unless he truly had NOT done his homework?

I have only the highest respect for Sarah Palin's choice to bring her fifth child to full term, knowing that he's afflicted with Down's Syndrome. On the other hand, the irony is just too rich for words that here is the Republican candidate for VP, the darling of the right wing, with teenage pregnancy right there at home. Would she like to tell us again about the virtues of abstinence and the evils of sex education?

If it should turn out eventually that the fifth child was actually her oldest daughter's, born and concealed when Bristol was 16, the hypocrisy is simply astounding.

Regards,
m.

I don't see so much "smearing" of Palin going on as simple exposure of the unpleasant or inconvenient facts about who she really is.

And, given all of the above, why would Palin put her political aspirations ahead of the mental and emotional well-being of her children and her family?

That's the question the righties should be asking themselves.

Hey... I'm just saying. I have a teenage daughter. She's not pregnant, but if she were, I certainly would not be seeking any sort of spotlight to be aimed at my family at a time when she needed her privacy most. Her needs would matter more to me than my own ambition. But again, to each their own.

Know what? There are medical or legal (birth certificate) records they could release that would put an end to all the speculation. In Palin's place, I would....
