Obama knew a third specific question that Warren would ask — the one about a "president's emergency plan for adoption." "[Warren] felt that since that was basically asking for a commitment, he felt that it was fair to tell them in advance that he was going to ask them that," Ross told me. So Warren told Obama, and planned to tell McCain when McCain arrived at Saddleback, but wasn't able to because of other distractions. So according to what Ross told me, Obama actually knew one more question in advance than did McCain.
hmmph.

SANCHEZ: ...Let me ask you about this. Last night, I heard you say that McCain would be in a cone of silence, and then half-hour into the event, I hear our guys here at our political desk announced that McCain has just arrived at the worship center. And I'm thinking, you know -- hey, if he just arrived at the worship center, he couldn't have been in the cone of silence, right?

WARREN: Well, that's true. He was in a cone of -- a Secret Service motorcade. That's exactly for sure.

SANCHEZ: But you said -- I'm going to quote you. I will press you just a little bit on this, because I love this cone of silence thing, and I want to borrow it with my four kids at home, by the way. 'We flipped a coin,' you said, 'and we have safely placed Senator McCain in a cone of silence.' That's what you said.

WARREN: Yes.

SANCHEZ: Did you think at the time -- when you said that, did you think he was in the cone of silence -- did you think he was in the building?

WARREN: Actually, yes, I did. There was actually a question I got to Senator Obama in advance that I didn't get to Senator McCain because he wasn't there. I actually wrote down on a piece of paper the very first question, because I wanted them both to be relaxed. I said here's the very first question. I gave it to both of them to ask that. But I also told Senator Obama, since there was one question where I was going to ask for a commitment, it was the commitment later about would you allow a PEPFAR type president's emergency plan for orphans, and I thought if I was going to ask them for a public commitment, I ought to let him know in advance. I got to tell Barack Obama that in advance. I did not get to tell John McCain that in advance. It caught him by surprise, I'm sure.

SANCHEZ: I mean, just out of fairness. I mean, look, this is CNN. We try to be as exact as we possibly can. I just wanted to get it on the record, and, of course, there's going to be people out there, pastor, who are going to say, well, if he wasn't there, like a half-hour before the event started, what would have stopped him from watching an event that was on all three channels, on the radio, there's Blackberries, there's the Internet. There's everything else. So, I guess you don't know and I don't know whether he had the questions or not.

WARREN: You know what -- you know what? In the first place, we asked him. We flat-out asked him. Did you hear any of the debate -- I mean, any of the discussion, and I trust the integrity of both John McCain and Barack Obama that they said they would abide by the rules. They knew the rules way in advance, that I would not give them the questions. I did tell them all of the themes, and went through all of the themes, said here's the kind of question, the themes that I'm going to deal with. I'm going to probably throw out a question about the economy. I'm going to probably throw out a question about climate change, which by the way I never got to, and a number of other issues. But I would not give them the wording of what specifically -- like for instance, it is one thing to say I may ask a question about the courts. It is another question to say, which of the existing Supreme Court would you not appoint.

SANCHEZ: Well, yes, and let's be fair. We called Senator McCain's office and they said that, no, we did not listen. We did not know. So what you're saying is part of that, we're just going to have to go on the honor system, and we certainly respect that --

Can you prove McCain heard Obama's answers? No, just another Kook fringe excuse/coverup for why Obama looked like a confused and lost person.

So in other words you are just making **** up and excusing Obama from his poor perfomance? Cool. Let me know when you come across some actual proof that McCain "cheated". Far as we know, Obama had an edge by knowing one more question than McCain.

This is one of the stupidest political controversies of all time. Warren claims he gave the candidates the first questions in advance then Warren says he even gave Obama an extra question that McCain didn't get. And yet it's the Obama worshippers crying like two-year-olds that McCain "cheated".

If you're a credible presidential candidate, you should be polished enough to have a strong, consistent answer for any question you might be asked. Heck, Warren wasn't even a journalist and you mean to tell me Obama couldn't even answer the questions of an amatuer coherently?

The reason the Dems are whining is because their candidate looked like a bumbling moron. It had nothing to do with questions or "cones of silence". It was all about "could the candidate think on his feet without a teleprompter". In Obama's case, the answer was clearly "no". No dirty trick can make a candidate look like a waffling idiot. The waffling idiot did that to himself.

Exactly, if Obama came out looking golden there wouldn't be any of this. But since McCain came in and knocked it out of the park he must have "cheated". I mean hell he's supposedly senile if you hear the Dems so you gotta make excuses why a "brilliant" politician like Obama couldn't beat him

McCain's 'Cone of Silence' Caper

by Robert Parry | August 19, 2008 - 8:39am

Millions of Americans who watched Barack Obama and then John McCain respond to nearly identical questions from evangelical minister Rick Warren were surely impressed by McCain’s quick and sharp answers. Supposedly he had been in a “cone of silence” while Obama was getting grilled during the preceding hour.

However, as it turned out, TV viewers and other Americans were misled. McCain had not been in any “cone of silence” shielding him from hearing Warren’s questions and Obama’s answers.

On Saturday night as Obama was on stage, McCain was in his motorcade on the way to the church and thus would have had access through his staff to the questions and how Obama had answered them.

When McCain came on the set, he played along with the fiction about being in a “cone of silence,” joking that “I was trying to hear through the wall.”

McCain then proceeded to knock the questions out of the proverbial park, impressing not only the audience at Rev. Warren’s Saddleback Church in California, but the political pundits who spent the next two days praising McCain’s performance and judging him the clear winner over Obama.
For instance, New York Times columnist William Kristol declared that it was “McCain’s night” and marveled at how “McCain, who went second, was crisp by contrast [to Obama] and his anecdotes colorful.”

Kristol also mocked grousing from Obama’s aides that McCain may have had access to the questions beforehand. “There’s no evidence that McCain had any such advantage,” Kristol wrote in his Monday column.

However, in the same newspaper, New York Times reporters discovered that the assertion by Warren that McCain had been in some “cone of silence” wasn’t true.

“Members of the McCain campaign staff, who flew here Sunday from California, said Mr. McCain was in his motorcade on the way to the church as Mr. Obama was being interviewed,” wrote reporter Katharine Q. Seeyle.

Still, McCain’s staff bristled at suggestions that McCain listened to the broadcast while en route to the church.
“The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous,” said McCain spokeswoman Nicolle Wallace. [NYT, Aug. 18, 2008]

What McCain’s Vietnam War-era POW status had to do with this wasn’t clear. But it was clear that Warren’s assurance that “we have safely placed Senator McCain in a cone of silence” wasn’t true, nor was McCain’s light-hearted remark about trying to hear through the wall.

If McCain did get pre-briefed on what questions to expect, it would be reminiscent of the presidential debate in 1980 when someone from Ronald Reagan’s campaign stole President Jimmy Carter’s debate briefing book and allegedly used it to coach Reagan’s responses.

I guess that's their answer to everything. He cheated on his wife. HE WAS A POW! His actions helped lead to one of the worst financial debacles in U.S. history. HE WAS A POW! He kicked his dog. HE WAS A POW!

The only moronic people in this thing are the ones who think a loaded debate headed by an evangelical minister means a thing in the world. Let's see what happens when they debate about real issues and not the stone-age republican trojan horses (abortion, gay marriage, etc).
