Default Steven Jackson Will Report Today

This is from Bernie Miklasz, who is a sports columnist for the St Louis Post Dispatch, from his forum, Bernie's Pressbox:

http://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewt...560902&start=0

"This just in:

Jackson is ending his holdout...

Jay Zygmunt got the call a short while ago...

Jackson will practice with the team tomorrow...

No contract yet -- but a team source tells me it won't take long to get it done, they are close, and both sides are confident that a deal will be reached soon.

Great news.

-B "

Just after the 2 a days and the "training camp grind" ended and regular season-like practices begin. Shocker.....even the young guys hate training camp.

its smart for him...he still gets paid and he decreases his chances of a freak pre-season injury a bit (assuming you don't believe in karma )

Yeah, but he also lost a good chunk of change, like $250,000. Is it worth losing that much money by holding out?
As for Jackson, I can finally put him back in my list of fantasy RB's. I had taken him out until he reported, because I'm not going to take a back who will miss 6 weeks of the season.

According to Bernie, they're near agreement on a new contract, so yeah, it was probably worth it. It would be surprising if the fines weren't forgiven as part of the deal.

I take it that Adrian Peterson is off your board then.

No, I said miss 6 weeks.
Peterson is going to rush for 1,500 yards and 12 TD's anyways.

If Peterson plays 12 full games I'll be surprised.

As per Steven Jackson, he'll probably get hurt too. Backs who hold out tend to get injured. Ask 400-carry LJ.

I'd say yes, because if he had have picked up a career ending injury, he'd lose more than that. It's a risk a lot of guys don't want to take.

THats why alot of them don't like the franchise tag. Get an injury that year and no long term contract in place...

The last time Peterson has played a full season was his freshman year at OU.

Some freak injuries, like breaking his collarbone diving into the end zone, ala Jay Cutler this year.

That's one out of countless others. He runs too upright and out of control. One of the reasons LT has been productive for so long is that he runs low and knows when to go out of bounds. He also isn't a guy who's going to lower his shoulder every play when a hip fake is suffice.

Peterson won't last as long as LT, but he'll be just as dominant, ala Earl Campbell.

Adrian Peterson is only as good as Chester Taylor spelling him. I think he's a tremendous talent, but he has a lot to prove to me, at least.

Jackson just got his wish:

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson signed a six-year contract Thursday and was on the field for practice after completing a physical.

Rams fans, rejoice: Steven Jackson ran with the football in his first practice Thursday. The team extended a multiyear contract offer and he ran with that, too.

Jackson agreed to a two-tiered deal with the Rams. It's either a three-year extension worth $29.3 million with $21 million guaranteed, or a five-year, $49.3 million contract that includes huge escalators in years four and five, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

The way the contract works is that it is structurally a five-year deal lasting until 2013. The final two years can be voided based on his performance, but his performance can also trigger the escalators to take the five-year deal to $49.3 million.

Though a breakdown of the triggers of the deal aren't fully known, a source told ESPN.com that Jackson has to perform similarly the next three seasons to the numbers he put up from 2005 through 2007 to fulfill the escalators.

Jackson rushed for 3,576 yards and 26 touchdowns the past three years and caught 171 passes for 1,396 yards and six touchdowns. In the prime of his career, Jackson is figuring he can equal those numbers and become a free agent by 2012.

After the 2011 season, Jackson would only be 28 and still have a chance to hit the free-agent market at a time he believes there might be a new collective bargaining agreement.

To get this deal, Jackson held out and accumulated about $400,000 of fines while out of camp. He held out long enough that he wasn't able to use 2008 as an accrued season counting in his years toward free agency.

By doing the three-year extension, Jackson doesn't have to worry. If there is no salary cap in 2010, Jackson would have enough years in the league to qualify for free agency for the 2012 season. His biggest accomplishment, though, was becoming the league's highest-paid running back, along with staying with the Rams.
