Because they have taken it upon themselves to debunk crap.
Sort of like the Amazing Randi, who is also a majician set out to disprove the ESP, telekinesis, and fortune teller hoaxers. Who better to prove somebody is trying to con you than someone who makes their living by conning people? PS, the videos were hilarious. Last edited by Bronco Bob; 08-17-2008 at 03:49 PM.. |

payroll, Penn and Teller have been exposing quacks and frauds for over 20 years now, long before GWB came on the scene. As for their political leanings, they are neither Republicans or Democrats and consider themselves to be Libertarians. (Bet you didn't watch the videos either.) |

My point (to Spider) was that if Bush can put an Arabian horse trainer in charge of FEMA then no one should be able to find fault with the idea of putting Penn and Teller in charge of exposing fraud. ![]() Last edited by L.A. BRONCOS FAN; 08-18-2008 at 12:44 AM.. |

They might not bring the most sophisticated or balanced approach, but I thought they addressed the main point that I always come to when talking about conspiracies: how the hell can you believe there are so many people involved in an intricate and complicated plot, and yet nobody actually involved has spoken. Not a single person. Not ever.
If so many people are willing to help rig the WTC with explosives, deceive the world about a moon landing, or help kill the president for political gain, don't you think at least one of them would be greedy enough to want to get really damn rich by writing an expose/going on every news show known to mankind with the truth? As they said, the Watergate cover up was exposed almost instantly, and that was small peanuts compared to what some people want to claim is going on. With the dawn of the internet, and the ability to share information anonymously to the entire world, it becomes even more impossible to believe the government could shush anything of significant magnitude. We saw Abu Ghraib on Youtube, and that was an operation run completely by the government and military outside the US. If they could kill 3000 people and stage the hijacking of 4 planes without any evidence, why the hell couldn't they cover that PR disaster up? |

These guys really are idiots. A couple of their topics on BS! were interesting, but for the most part they just slap together programs with rote contrarian takes. They do VERY little research (if any), the only info they use is that which serves their contrarian conclusions.
As with all their episodes, their Wal-Mart show was ill-informed and largely just designed to provoke. They basically said, "they're not doing anything illegal, what's the problem? The minimum wage is $5.75!" They use the very definition of a straw man argument, and then trumpet their "victory" over that straw man as if they'd struck gold. Even worse, they made fun of the Wal-Mart detractors in a personal manner that was imo grotesquely rude. Sure, the detractors who call the pay "slave wages" deserve to get slapped down a bit .... but stupid Penn acts like the people who work for WM would be automatically unemployed if it wasn't for WM, which is of course nowhere near true. Plus, I have a great deal of personal knowledge on another of their topics, I was even acquainted with one of the guys they interviewed, and that program was the worst, most ill-informed, dead-wrong, knee-jerk contrarian presentations I've ever seen on any topic in my life
I just sat there with my jaw hanging open. They got every.single.point.wrong.They're trying to be "funny" John Stossel-type reporters ... without doing the work required. And they fail miserably. ![]() |

The green video is worth watching, just to see the people getting eco-counseling.
The thing about these videos is that they are interviewing real "whackjobs" (as they put it). It's every bit as fair as saying, "Rush Limbaugh is a jackass. All Conservatives are jackasses." |

As I stated, I thought they brought up the most obvious problem with wide spread conspiracy theories that can often get lost in the silliness of minutia of analyzing the collapse of the towers for signs of demolition explosions. But, ultimately, you're right that the program doesn't absolve the government of any guilt. It doesn't sound like you're even really who the program was critiquing. What you're talking about isn't really a conspiracy theory. The discussion/debate about what the government should have been doing before and after 9/11 is more than reasonable, and your doubts are well founded. I was more reacting to the ideas I've seen on the threads about that Loose Change video and the like. |
