Default More Dallas camp reports

...........- After several reports surfaced online that the Broncos defensive line was getting pushed around by the “huge” Dallas offensive line, the front four came out to play Thursday afternoon.

Elvis Dumervil had a sack on Tony Romo in the first session of 11-on-11 drills. In the second session, Alvin McKinley broke through the middle of the line and had a sack on Brad Johnson, then Nic Clemons got another would-be sack on the very next play. Two plays later, Paul Carrington joined the party and had a would-be sack running in from the blind side. On one play, linebacker Jamie Winborn got into the action, busting through the line and knocking over a Dallas lineman in the process. “The giant has fallen!” he proclaimed.

- In 11-on-11 drills, the play still goes on even after the defense has a “sack.” On one particular play, John Engelberger and Kenny Peterson both beat their man to the quarterback, but stopped and let Romo launch a ball down field toward receiver Miles Austin. A chasing Karl Paymah knocked the ball away, drawing cheers from the defense.

- Terrell Owens didn’t have any significant catches in the afternoon session. In fact, he might not have had any at all — I’m just covering my bases in case I forgot a short inconsequential reception. On several plays he was overthrown by Romo, on another the ball was too high, and on one play Domonique Foxworth swatted the ball away from T.O. on a deep route at the last second. Owens felt he deserved a call, so he stood with his hands on his hips before slowly walking back to the huddle. Winborn shouted back at him to “Quit cryin’.”

- The Dallas offense did have a few nice plays, including a run up the middle by rookie Felix Jones that looked like it could be for a big gain after some solid blocking. On the very next play Romo executed a successful screen pass to the left that also would have gained some serious yardage if the play was live.

- Wesley Woodyard wasn’t fooled by a reverse, and when the running back flipped the ball to Isaiah Stanback running the other way, Woodyard was ready for a big stop in the backfield.

- Tyrone Poole had another near-interception this afternoon after Carrington broke through the line and Romo forced a long pass that bounced off of the cornerback’s hands.

...is it too early too start expecting Woodyard to take over the mike position by mid-season? The guy has a serious nose for the ball.

There seems to be an intensity on D that was missing last year.

I have been reading all of the Camp Reports and have to admit I am very excited and optimistic this Year even though we have a young Team. My observation/question is: weren't we all this excited last Year with the Camp Reports (I know we had a lot of new FA's and such last Year to look forward to) only to have our butt's handed to us in the Preseason game against Dallas?

My feeling was that Wade Phillips game planned on us for that Game (and maybe Shanny was just evaluating Players), and personally, I want us to win this time-I hope we can pull this one out-does anyone else feel this way?

The problem with camp reports is they are practicing against eachother so its hard to gauge how well they are in regards to other teams. At game 3 of the preseason it was pretty clear the D was in trouble.

Whats nice about this report is its an unbiased report from another teams blogs.

Very good point-I can normally hold my enthusiasm in check until the regular Season, but I have to admit I am having trouble controlling it(after so many Years where it looked like we really had something only to not make the Playoffs)-

APa, very true..

i remember watching that preseason game and hoping that our offense would be able to put up 30 a game to give us a 9-7 record...

they were being pushed all over the place

Well actually, this looks like a DB.com report, but still...

After the egg the Cowboys laid against the Chargers in their first preseason game, and reading about these camp reports, I've been reading comments on other Cowboys sites of nothing short of panic. They're freaking out, man...

Yeah two elite units going against each other and two crappy units going against each other might look equally good/bad. That's why the Cowboys coming in is such a boon to us. We know this team is at least pretty good, if not elite. If we can hang with them, if nothing else we won't suck this year.

It's a Denver Broncos Blog...not a Cowboys blog.

Either way, it's fun to read and exciting to hear! Can't wait to see the game Saturday!

I think Shanahan has seen enough football to know when he has a pretty good team. He seemed pretty confident when he said we will make the playoffs. Not like he was trying to convince anyone, but more his honest assessment.

Eddie Royal has been a blessing in so many ways so far, and Jackson as well. Cutler is going to take a step forward, after playing exceptionally as a first full season starter. I hope he uses his legs more this year, simply to force the defenses to defense it.

And any fool can see the run stopping defense is better than last year already. Our scheme matches our personel.

Its the Sandy Eggo game I'll be watching, even without Brandon. That will tell us alot. We dont have to beat them in the beginning of the season in order for me to know we're better, but we have to have a better showing than last year. If we play them tough early, I think we'll beat them later.

Cause Rivers SUCKS and has a landing strip for a forehead.

Can we get some links to reports done from the Cowboys perspective? For Day 1 it seemed like there were a fair amount and I enjoyed reading the other vantage points to get a more "balanced" idea of how camp was really going. I tried to search for some, but the majority of my results came back with Dallas newspaper sites. What's the Dallas analog of the Orangemane? Do they have badasses like Oskie, Kaylore, montrose, etc. doing reports for them?

All of the reports from the Dallas side I have seen are on the Dallas Morning News blog. I doubt they have any message board members at practices because 1 - They would have to get press passes and 2 - they are likely in Dallas, practice is in Denver. THAT would be dedication. Trekkin all the way to Denver from TX to watch practice.

The philosophy difference in last years game was very apparent. Wade played his team as a tune up, Shanahan as evaluation. If anything I think Denver should be better prepared for what the cowboys bring in preseason. Doesn't mean they'll win, but hopefully it won;t look like such one sided punishment.

I wish this game was on live. I am pumped to watch it. I have the DVR set to record it Sunday at 3(central) so I'll have to wait till then I guess. At least I will get to watch it.

That's it exactly!

I will say this though, we were not having success against the Cowboys first team OLine. That goes for our front four. Actually, I now recall our interior DL having some success against anybody in front of them. The Ends struggled though. Hard to see every play but when I focused on Moss, Crowder, and Elvis...they were getting stood up and dismissed.

If you would have watched TO in practice you would likely have a new found respect for him. I've heard stories of his intensity in practice and how he is a good guy to have on your side... well, I got to witness that first hand. I was within 15 or 20 feet of him (Set the camera to 5m!) and could see his intensity. I'll be honest with everyone here, TO is fast! Faster than Brandon no doubt. He ran full speed and I mean full speed, perhaps it was the different pants he wore compared to everyone else that made him look faster, but he was fast. He would generally be the first to run through a drill and then he'd turn around and coach the younger guys. On the sideline drills he'd walk over to the sideline where the receivers were catching the ball and holler support and raise the intensity. "Fire off the line, round that route don't box it, catch then feet....COME'ON!" EVERYTIME! He makes players around him better and he helps them to bring out their best. I never had a chance to see Rod Smith in camp so I don't know if he was the same way, but that's how I picture a team leader. Somebody that makes everyone around him better, that is T.O. at this stage of his career. Brandon Marshall will be that guy as well. Not sure if he is there yet but he's close. He goes hard in practice and expects perfection... now he has to speak enthusiasm and intensity from his heart to his teammates', then he'll be in TO's class. Brandon isn't far off in terms of talent, but he has a little ways to go overall.

Needless to say, I was very impressed with TO and even though I always liked him as a player, I now have a new found respect for the guy.

Funny how this camp played out. I went in hoping guys like Pacman and Tank Johnson could turn it around and that there was hope for them. Then you see the BS Pacman is pulling and the trash he is spewing and you change your mind quickly.
