Natalie Morales, NBC Anchor | NewsBusters.orgThe Big Three networks continued to ignore the party affiliation of the now-incarcerated Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on Friday morning, just as they had done in their evening news programs the previous night. The Early Show on CBS chose to ignore the story of Kilpatrick’s arrest on a bail violation entirely, while ABC’s Good Morning America devoted one 16-second news brief to the story near the beginning of its 7 am Eastern hour.

Ironically, NBC’s Today show, which is devoting most of its programming to the Summer Olympics in Beijing, spent the most time on the subject. It first aired a 12-second news brief just after the top of 7 am Eastern hour, and devoted an entire segment to the story at the beginning of the 8 am Eastern hour. The report by correspondent Ron Allen was just shy of 2 minutes long, but still ignored Kilpatrick’s Democratic affiliation.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The on-screen captioning in Allen’s report identified two others who had sound bites in the report -- the judge who sent Kilpatrick to jail and a member of the Detroit city council. But in the mayor’s sole sound bite, he was not identified on-screen.

Earlier this year, the Today show also neglected the party affiliation of Mayor Kilpatrick when news of his sex scandal broke. The February 1, 2008 CyberAlert recounted how co-anchor Ann Curry "forgot to note the party affiliation of the Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in her report on his recent ordeals."

The transcripts of the Good Morning America news brief and both items from the Today show:

Kwame Kilpatrick, Detroit, Michigan Mayor | NewsBusters.orgABC’s Good Morning America, from 7:06 am EDT:

RYAN OWENS: The Mayor of Detroit is waking up in a jail cell this morning. Kwame Kilpatrick violated his bond in a perjury case by traveling to Canada. And the mayor faces more legal trouble today. He's expected to be charged with assaulting a sheriff's deputy.

NBC’s Today Show, from 7:07 am EDT:

NATALIE MORALES: Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick spent the night in jail after he violated the terms of his bail on earlier charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. He admits traveling to Canada without notifying the court.

NBC’s Today Show, from 8:04 am EDT

NATALIE MORALES: Detroit's embattled mayor woke up this morning behind bars after a judge sent him to jail for the night for violating his bond. NBC's Ron Allen is in Detroit with more. Ron, good morning.

Ron Allen, NBC Correspondent | NewsBusters.orgRON ALLEN: Good morning, Natalie. Yes, the mayor was issued a green prison jumpsuit and a private cell -- the latest public humiliation for Kwame Kilpatrick, already facing eight felony charges, a sex scandal, and calls to resign from office.

ALLEN (voice-over): Inmate number 25330's mug shot had a slight smile. But Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's appearance before a judge Thursday was deadly serious.

KWAME KILPATRICK: Your honor, I'm asking for, you know, your forgiveness. It will never happen again.

ALLEN: Kilpatrick had been free on bail, awaiting trial for perjury, obstruction of justice, misconduct in office -- charges the Mayor denies. But he traveled to Canada on city business, he claims, without notifying the court, violating the terms of his bail.

JUDGE RONALD GILES, MICHIGAN DISTRICT COURT: The court is going to order that all travel be suspended, and two, that you be remanded to the Wayne County jail for processing.

ALLEN: Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty were indicted in March, accused of lying about allegedly having an affair and their roles in the firing of two police officers who were investigating corruption. A local newspaper uncovered thousands of text messages between them, some very explicit. Both have denied having a personal relationship or any wrongdoing. Many in Detroit have heard enough.

KENNETH COCKRELL, JR., DETROIT CITY COUNCIL: And I hope we can draw this saga to a close soon. We have to.

ALLEN (on-camera): This morning, the Mayor faces more charges potentially. The criminal trial is supposed to start next September. But this morning, we're hearing talk of a possible plea bargain. And meanwhile, the city council and even the state's governor are looking for ways to remove him from office. Natalie?

MORALES: Ron Allen in Detroit. Thank you, Ron.

If you're trying to start some kind of score card on who is the slimiest, cheating politician, Democrats or Republicans, I'd advise you give it up in a hurry or become thoroughly embarrassed since you are a Republican.

A more accurate image would be one of a bank robber (the GOP) telling a jaywalker (the Democratic Party) "See? There's no difference between you and I."

I believe the point, as documented in the narrative of the Kilpatrick stories and evidenced for many years is that WHEN the media reports on a Democrat scandal, they either

a) minimize reporting on it ("no big deal", "everybody does it", etc).
b) fail to mention the politician in the scandal is a Democrat.
c) bury the fact that he is a Democrat deep in the story rather than putting it in the lead paragraph which is the standard M.O. for Republicans caught in scandal.

Particularly clever of the media was when Democrat congressman Gary Condit was connected to the disappearance of Chandra Levy and rather than reporting that Condit was a Democrat referred to him as "conservative congressman Gary Condit" and demanded the Republican Speaker of the House censure the guy.

You had to read deep into the story to find any mention that Condit was a Democrat. The media does their best to ignore party affiliation when it is one of their own or blur the issue to confuse people as to what party the scandalous Democrat belongs to.

So does that mean the republicans are twice as bad, or the democrats are half as bad?

Do the statistics really matter? Because Republicans are on record for more problems does this make it ok for Dems to behave like idiots until they catch up?

The repukes also outstrip the Dems by many a mile when it comes to most criminal convictions in American history.

Think it's more along the lines of Reps and Dems take the high road...everyone on this board likes to play "gotcha" more than discussing solutions. We're kind of like Congress.

Since we aren't making the decisions for finding solutions we don't have much more we can do but most people here do suggest what they think we ought to be doing on various topics.

You're actually just supporting my point. The word "Democrat" and "arrested", "charged", etc. appears less because the media tries to leave that little factoid out of stories where Democrats have been arrested or charged.

That's going to affect your little Google sample although I'd contend that comparison based on Googling keywords is a piss poor way of measuring how many incidents actually occured.

For example, if I enter "Nick Nolte arrested" in Google I get:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 87,400 for Nick Nolte arrested. (0.16 seconds)"

If I enter "Britney Spears arrested" in Google I get:
"Results 1 - 10 of about 1,690,000 for Britney Spears arrested. (0.12 seconds)"

So, by your way of thinking, Britney Spears must be five times the criminal that Nick Nolte is when what it more accurately reflects the media attention Britney Spears' arrest received compared to Nick Nolte.

Since my contention is that the media is less interested in Democrat scandals than Republican scandals, your little google search only confirms that the media is more interest in Republican scandals, not that Republicans actually commit more scandals.

Thanks for helping me prove my point.

If your point is Republicans out number Democrats when it comes to breaking the law, lack of morals, etc... you are welcome.

The right wing media complaints about the poor Republicans being picked on doesn't wash though.

By the way, If I put in "Bush arrested charged" in Google, I get:
Results 1 - 10 of about 341,000 for Bush arrested charged. (0.19 seconds)

But when I type in "Clinton arrested charged" in Google, I get:
Results 1 - 10 of about 3,270,000 for Clinton arrested charged. (0.20 seconds)

So we can either conclude that the Clintons are 10 times the criminals that the Bushes are or that your methodology is ridiculous.

This googling methodology may have more merit than I first imagined:

Results 1 - 10 of 10 for TexanBob gay. (0.19 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 55 for Beerslug gay. (0.02 seconds)
Results 1 - 10 of about 7,750,000 for Spider gay. (0.17 seconds)

No, your reasoning is flawed because of the use of common names where I used the two political party names. Just get used to knowing you right wingers are bunch sex scandal, bribing, special interest lackies minus the morals they preach upon everyone else.

BTW...

Results 1 - 100 of about 1,650,000 for bill clinton arrested. (0.08 seconds)

Results 1 - 100 of about 2,180,000 for george bush arrested. (0.33 seconds)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Results 1 - 100 of about 2,540,000 for bill clinton criminal. (0.41 seconds)

Results 1 - 100 of about 3,520,000 for george bush criminal. (0.44 seconds)
