Edwards is done politically. ![]() ![]() Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate In an ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE interview, Edwards Reveals He Cheated, But Didn't Father Child By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS August 8, 2008 267 comments FONT SIZE SHARE John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today. Edwards Democratic presidential candidate former U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-NC) speaks to supporters during a campaign event at the Keene State University in Keene, New Hampshire January 6, 2008. (Carlos Barria / Reuters) More Photos In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her. Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test. Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father. A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child. Related Obama Says 'Aloha' to Campaign Woes Edwards: 'It's Time For Me to Step Aside' Spitzer Quits But Other Public Figure May Be Linked to Escort Ring According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience. Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa. Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family about the affair in 2006. Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease. When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report. "The story is false, it's completely untrue, it's ridiculous," Edwards told reporters then. He repeated his denials just two weeks ago. Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month. The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting. Last edited by Meck77; 08-08-2008 at 03:25 PM.. |

Too bad Edwards didn't get the nomination. That would have been classic. What I don't get is why he refuses to take a DNA test to find out if he's the father of the love child. He says it's not his but someone that worked for him. Hmm how we he know that?

Yeah because this kind of stuff really affects our national security. Lying about going to war and spending billions and sacrificing countless american lives is ok.

Politicians cheat on their wives? nooooo never happens! C'mon, who really cares. One, his political career as an elected official was done before this, but i'd love him to have a seat in the Obama cabinet still.
The one question i have is...why now? Why let this all out now? Maybe trying to diffuse it before something bigger happens. But whatever, i think we've long been too involved in politicans sex lives when it really has no effect on their ability to govern. Politicians having mistresses is as american as apple pie and i could frankly care less what they do with their free time. These are all men on power trips anyway. Plus, as mention, this wasn't some hooker, so it doesnt quite have the sleaze factor. Hasn't this country learned anything from the Monica Lewinsky debacle? THIS IS NOT A STORY |

I'll say the same thing I said when LABF was gleefully fleecing some Republican over the exact same thing.
"Don't care" I really don't. I hope his family is ok, that's all. |

Yeah, this is trivial crap compared to the real issues facing the country right now. Yes, it's personal business between him and his family. Yes, it's disgusting that the media feels the need to snoop in on this.
But you know, I still think I have a right to be pissed off about this. I decided at the beginning of the year that I was going to do serious work for whichever Democrat won the nomination. I've been canvassing door to door and phone banking for Obama, and he was my first choice, but I would have done it for Edwards if he'd won the nomination. There are a lot of people like me this year. And if Edwards had won the nomination, and then this had come out during the campaign... it would have basically killed any chance of him winning. Hundreds of thousands of people's work wasted by his selfish decision to run for the party's nomination when he knew he had this skeleton in his closet. John Edwards' married life is none of my business. But his decision to run for president is my business, and I have a right to be angry that he made that decision knowing full well that he had a scandal waiting to erupt that could've given the White House away to the Republicans for another 4 or even 8 years. All I can say is thank god he's not the nominee. |

It really doesn't matter in the big picture. Who cares if a guy cheats on his wife? If i cheated on my wife I would lie about it also. If we destroy every politician who cheats on his wife and then lies about it we will have about 40 politicians left.

I don't care about any politician, Republican or Democratic, having an extramarital affair. I also don't care when they solicit gay sex in airport bathrooms, for example. I do care when those same people try to lecture the rest of us on what's morally acceptable and what's not though. EDIT: But I'm totally with SonofLe, I will definitely make fun of it. I can't think of any good John Edwards jokes just yet, but I'll be happy to hear some. (Two Americas? He's got one woman for each of them!... how's that?) I wonder if this will bring back into focus John McCain's well documented affair with his current wife, while married to his first wife, whom he left after she was involved in a terrible car accident, despite her fidelity while he was a POW.
I'd have to think, that the Edwards' affair will to John McCain's chagrin open up the discussion about affairs in general and then specifically to his own infidelity. |

Say goodbye to all your political ambitions John Edwards. This truly helps repair the wonderful image of politicians and lawyers. Great to see all the democrat apologists try and sweep this under the rug. If you are a public servant what you do in your "private life" isn't private.

You can't be serious. Edwards is an unqualified boneheaded idiot that has no business anywhere near an elected post. He's a liar and a cheat.

And John McCain isn't? At least Edwards didn't dump his his dying wife (or disfigured in McCain's first wife's case) and marry a younger, much richer woman.

He's a self made man that fights for the populist cause. A successful lawyer that actually "gets it" and showed great conviction during this latest presidential run. He's not qualified to be attorney general? Why? Cause he lied to the media about some huge story (which most wasnt true). Whatever.
