Default Are you ready to be concerned if

Cutler doesn't make huge progress in 08 or are you giving him til 09 or 2010 to really step up?

I'm actually giving him 08 and 09 because really he is only in his 2nd full year starting. I think expecting him to come on strong with a team that is young and so many new faces every year and not a true #2 wr to help out.

DL will you give this unit a break in 08 or will you expect the line to be solid this season.

I think we need to give this group til 09 before we start wondering if we need to add alot more help to this unit.

Thoughts?

As far as I'm concerned, his first two years have exceeded my expectations. I think that one him having one off year pretty soon is a given.

Unless there are injuries to kill his progress, his 08 season should be much improved from his first 20 or so games in the NFL. I cant see him regressing to a status of a backup caliber like a Croyle.

He's already flirting with top 10 status based on potential alone.

As long as he doesn't regress, I won't worry about him. QB is not our problem.

My opinion is that his 2008 performance will make your question moot.

Simply put, if Jay Cutler can get enough protection he can be the best QB in the league. You look at is body of work and then you look at what he does when there isn't a guy in his face. He's incredible when he has time. He's shown the ability to buy himself time on occassion as well. Ryan Clady will help him more than a #2 WR. I think he is capable of 3500 yards and 30 TDs. I will say that a lot depends on Brandon and how long he is suspended.

As for the DL. Tackle is still a concern. Marcus Thomas looks very good. Jarvis Moss is looking OUTSTANDING! In fact, Jarvis Moss is probably the best DE on this team right now. I'm learning to watch some of the little things thanks to guys like Khan and Apa. Paying close attention to him he takes the coaching very well AND applies it immediately. Case in point was during yesterdays one-on-one coaching he was working on sliding/skip steps along the LOS. This was to help him keep a strong base so that he could make the tackle if and when the RB cut back toward him. During practice there was a running play to the opposite side of Jarvis, his first instinct was to turn and run and he started to do just that, but after a step or two he turned into his slide step. The RB cut back and he was not only in a good position to make the TFL, he had maintained his discipline covering his containment responsibility (rather than over pursuing) and had a strong base to make a full tackle as opposed to an arm tackle. On a similar play later he did the same thing shuffle steps along the LOS but still pursuing the RB. He then was able to explode into the RB and tackle him for a loss of 3 or 4 yards. These were the plays I referred to yesterday that on back to back series he had stopped running plays for no gain or a loss of yards.

Tim Crowder seems to be coming along a little slower. I really haven't seen much from him in camp thus far. I'll make it a point to watch him more closely next time. But, to answer your question. With Elvis, Jarvis, Marcus Thomas, and DRob, I think we have a good set of young guys along the DLine. This team is young and they are going in the right direction. I expect better results in 08 from this DLine.

cutler has done well with alot of holes. i expect him to be better this year.

until the Defensive line steps up its a valid concern. i dont think well have to go really high with a pick at DT i think it would be wise to get another run stuffer.(im concerned that powell have a rough time at getting back could take him until year three) and its highly possible to find a good RS at tackle in later rounds. more so then a UT

IF our OLine can hold up at the point of attack, and I think that it will, Cutler will be top 10 in passer rating, yards and TDs.....

Not saying there's not room for improvement but how much more of a step can he realistically take? I expect a very solid, bordeline pro-bowl performance from Jay this year. He was almost there last year.

I think that getting his diabetes under control is going to be a major factor.

At the least he should do as well as last year, and probaly better. Blood sugar levels affect more than just your physical skills, they also affect your thought process and ability to process information quickly. His stamina and strength should also improve.

All this assumes no injury happens that can affect his game.

Borderline all-pro or all-pro is not out of the question.

I'm not worried about Cutler or the passing game at all. This is the first time in years that I felt good about the passing game. I'm mostly worried about the running game and the run defense, which have been very good for most of Shanahan's tenure. This is the first offseason in years that I didn't feel good about this team. If you can't run, or stop the run, there will be problems.

I'm ready to worry when an asteroid the size of Denver is spotted on a collision course with Invesco Field. Other than that, worrying is for sissy's ...Strap em up and lets play some FOOTBALL!

Both tackles playing their first snaps in NFL at the position. Two returning OL veterans held together with bailing wire as far as we know. The final starter currently listed as TFTP.

Only rock-solid wideout facing a suspension. After that, it's a slot guy, a rookie, and two guys who failed with their last teams.

Top two rbs were undrafted rookies last year. Fullback none too inspiring, unless a 7th round rookie comes on like wildfire.

Tight end security blankets looking pretty solid for both blocking and catching.

And that's ignoring the questions on defense, special teams and coaching changeover that will impact field position and score.

I have hopes that a good number of the above will work out, but as several have said, starting qb is probably the least questionable position on the offense. If Cutler has a down year, it's most likely to be a result of running for his life, or playing from behind all day, or a subpar receiving corps, or no run support. If the rest of the offense can create the environment for him to progress (see Carr, David), I have no doubt he will do it.

Only 3 QBs had that last season. That's a major jump from "among the best" to "THE best" in the league.

I hope you're right!

I'm already concerned because Cutler fumbles too much. If he fumbles more then twice this year I will worry he is a fumble machine.

Cutler is going to be a badass.....but wait lets ask Chugger fans, because they have a different opinion and whatever they say is always "true"
