Consider the Packers backed up against their own goal line.
Brett Favre followed through on his statements that he wanted to come out of retirement by faxing his reinstatement letter to the NFL on Tuesday, sources close to the quarterback told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Favre sent the letter to the league office late this afternoon and also spoke by phone with commissioner Roger Goodell, who may wait until Wednesday to act, in hopes the Packers and Favre can reach a resolution during the next 24 hours, the sources said. Packers general manager Ted Thompson is now forced to make a decision -- accept Favre back, trade him or release him. Favre told Mortensen on Sunday that the GM had pleaded with the quarterback not to show up at camp on Sunday, so that the situation could be resolved. "I asked Ted [Saturday], 'Am I welcome in the building if I report?' And Ted was just about shattered," Favre said. "He said, 'Brett, you can't do that -- you'll get me fired.' I told him I'm not trying to get anybody fired. So Ted asked me to let the guys report and let's try to resolve this over the next two or three days." With no concrete movement in the past few days, Favre made his move. The Packers have publicly committed to Favre's backup from last season, Aaron Rodgers, however. Favre has offered to compete for the starting job in training camp, but he said in Sunday's interview that he was told that is not an option. "It's pretty clear -- and this is what I told the commissioner -- that they want me to go away, stay retired," Favre said. The Packers have already said that they will not release their former franchise quarterback, but they have looked into trading him. Nothing tangible has happened on that front either. Favre retired in March after 16 season in the league as the all-time leader in touchdown passes with 442. Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN. |

Why doesn't the Pack just put him in as the starter? It's not like he isn't there best QB

Plummer should call Farve and explain, when the team says the new guy is the QB despite your winning record. Retire to your hot wife and piles of cash. Maybe he needs to learn handball. |

They'll bench him until the season starts and then trade him for not what they wanted, but it will ensure he has missed enough time to not know the system of wherever he goes and he'll be a non-factor.

I hope if he is crazy enough to show up, they simply tell him to "have a seat over there". Give him a nice view of the train wreck he started.

I'm starting to get annoyed with the whole Favre thing. It's been getting old FAST. If the Packers don't want him, they should just cut him, and let him do his thing.

I don't think they can afford to have a 12m dollar salary and a 3 ring circus act sitting on the bench. He has to approve the trade as well. Eventually they're just gonna either have to trade him where he wants to go or cut him. It is pretty ridiculous though....

The funniest thing about this whole scenario is the fan's reactions. I love seeing people get worked up about this like it practically effects their lives in some way. Honestly, some of these posts... you get the idea that people are fighting through the tears just to get their thoughts up on the internet.
Big f'in deal. He waffled. So what. He's a drama-queen. Big wow. Get over it. We've got Brandon Marshall stalking people, driving drunk and slicing his arms open... and that's all good, but some old fart in Wisconsin can't make up his mind and we're all just in a tizzy. ![]() I will say this, Favre has been goofy through this, but the Packers are making no sense right about now. Either let the guy back in... or kick him loose. Want the drama to end? All their FO has to do is make a fking decision. |

"Well, we thought you were going to retire" "I'm not" "Ummmm.... well, we don't want to cut you and we don't want you playing for us, but we also don't want you playing anywhere else." Huh? I also love how this GM acts like Favre is putting him out. Imagine the best thing to ever happen to their franchise wanting to come back to the fans who would be happy to have him. Crazy, huh? How dare Brett. |

UNTIL he decides to spell his name like he says it , OR says his name like it is spelled I will refer to him as Flavor Fav ...
cause he is a flavor clown I mean come on is there any other word/name that has a letter LATER in the word that we pronounce earlier in the word then the letter is placed ? Last edited by TDmvp; 07-30-2008 at 04:19 AM.. |

IF Favre gets cut, it'll be on the eve of the regular season when there's no salary due but it's too late to learn another system. Before the Pack would trade him for nothing, they'd sit on him until that time, I think. Then if someone was offering something still, then take it. Not early enough for him to contribute though.
The Packers have a young enough core that they can handle not getting anything for Favre. They weren't going to get anything for him before, they still wont now. They can't refuse to let him practice but there's nothing that says Favre can't be on a throw 3 passes with noone around you then rest for 45 minutes cycle and repeat, right? That's the only concern with sitting on Favre is taking the injury risk but they've gotta be able to protect themselves from that. |
