Default Poll: retire #80?

yes or no and why?

i know this has been done before (kind of) but now that he's officially gone, i think it makes sense to rehash it, especially in light of bowlens comments.

i vote yes, because i think he is the 3rd greatest bronco of all time, and because he was not only an amazing player but ALSO an amazing leader.
in rod we trust....always.

If 80 deserves to be retired, so does 84. I'm borderline on 30.

I vaugely remember the official reason #30 wasn't because of the length of his contributions or something like that. I say for our home opener we retire #80 and #84 they both gave everything to the Broncos became leaders of the Broncos during the best years. If not Sharpe, Rod definitly he is going to contuine to work with the Broncos for as long as he can. He is a franchise player a Bronco forever. He epitomized the Denver Broncos I grew up loving, hard working, and fun.

He is also more than a #1 WR, he was on the practice squad. He was undrafted and worked himself so hard Canton should have him on speed dial. From Practice squad to HOF, means you deserve to have that kind of honor.

All this week local media has stated that Rod has been unfairly given less praise from the fans than others. I didn't buy it but looking at the results of the poll I wonder if they have a point now. He is on the level of Davis and above Sharpe in my mind.

I have issues with this question because if it were up to me then a lot more jerseys would be retired than just the 3 we currently have.

So I said yes based on not only his production but his overall love for being a Denver Bronco and his contributions to the organization as a whole.

Here we go again...let's retire #80, #30, #84, #87, #1 and anyone else of note that was on those winning super bowl teams and start issuing three digit numbers whilst we're at it.

I say 2 out of the 5 on your list belong more than the others. Rod being one of them and not because of his contributions in the SB. Mainly because of his work ethic and the fact that no matter what he never missed a practice. Or that Shanny mentioned a play installed on the sidelines that was practiced last in Training Camp and Rod Smith knew it by heart. Or the fact that on the TD in the SB against Atlanta's Robinson, Rod noticed that Robinson wasn't playing like they had practiced for and told coach. The next play he scored a TD. Stuff like that is what makes him a valid and deserving ring of fame member.

I think Rod deserves to have #80 retired.

His work ethic is legendary.

He personifies what a coach looks for as a player and a leader.

His number being retired would be for more reasons than his numbers alone.

Yes, Rod deserves it. The most significant Bronco next to Elway and Little.

Both DAVIS and SHARPE were more significant. Along with ELWAY they got us to the Superbowl and gave us our championship.

He was a great player and true warrior for us, but he's not even in the same sentence as ELWAY and definitely not when any of the others are the word "significant".

Rod carried us through the post-Elway years until now. He was our only real offensive weapon for many years.

Horribly disagree.

Sharpes Bronco legacy was tarnished by the Ravens and TDs career was brief

Rod was the face of this franchise after #7 hung it up.

Couldn't be more wrong here. This is more than the Superbowl. Rod was the foundation of this organization for over a decade. He deserves to have his number retired above any of those.

Tough, but I voted no... and hear me out...

No one has blathered on about how great this guy has been more than myself. He's our all-time leader in yards from scrimmage and I believe he was way up there in points scored, as well. He's a no-brainer for the ROF, and easily the best WR this franchise has ever seen... as a player and a leader. (How many WRs are leaders at all, much less the way he was!?)

That said, retiring a number (imo) should be reserved for those who's greatness you are almost convinced can't be duplicated. It has to be someone SO dominant, you can never see another player wearing the number. A once in a franchise kind of player. Elway is the obvious definition, there.

Rod is arguably the 2nd greatest Bronco ever, but I'd still say no on retiring the #... but wouldn't be shocked or upset in the least if we did.

Plus, it's sort of cool to see those numbers (84, 30, etc.) out there and have the memories kick in a bit.
