Default Anyone hear Obama speak without a teleprompter?

It’s like watching Bush II --flat-out painful to listen to. He can deliver a speech (that is written for him) but when he has to come up with his own responses, from mildly challenging questions he bumbles and stumbles. I know it is blasphemous to speak against Lord Obama, but contrary to ABC, CBS, and NBC (his new marketing team) I cant help but state the obvious, that he is another empty suite.

I am assuming that is what you and many others have done -- checked their intellectual honesty at the door? Maybe you have had some less than flattering stuff to say about Lord Obama, but I tell you -- I have not heard much from the media who have given up even pretending to report the news.

You hear what he said about the surge?

This sort of criticism from a guy who voted for a man who can't speak in complete sentences even with a teleprompter is beyond ironic.

It smacks of desperation.

In any event, I don't think you get to be president of the Harvard Law Review and a professor of law without public speaking skills.

No, actually not true -- as you know, I have not exactly been a supporter of McCain, or the R's, but say it to deflect if you wish. But I was surprised to hear how poor he was when he actually has to articulate his ideas off the cuff, which makes me think that he doesnt have that much at his center. Its not like he cant deliver a line, so the fact that he cant do it when off message makes me wonder how much is at his core, and how much is fluff.

It is interesting that how tweaked folks get when we question the Messiah ...

It's not your questioning that "tweaks" me (I'm not planning to vote for Obama.)

It's the irony of who is doing the questioning.

That is, you had no trouble supporting a guy who, from the first moment he appeared on the national stage, distinguished himself as an embarrassingly inarticulate boob and a complete ignoramus - (remember, BTW, all the spin we heard from right-wingers about how Bush's "lack of eloquence" was no big deal, not necessarily a reflection of his intelligence, etc.) but now public speaking skills are suddenly a concern or a priority for you.

Care to provide an example?

He's definitely not my messiah, but living in Illinois I've seen him speak at events sans-teleprompter both large and small. I'd dare say he's stronger when he goes without a teleprompter because he comes across incredibly genuine while still being unquestionably articulate and intelligent.

Last one was the Cape Girardeau, MO town hall, very good off the cuff answers to question after question.

You're out of your mind ... he did a sit-down with Katie Couric today in Amman that was excellent, very thoughtful. He does have a mild tendency toward "Uhs" when pausing ... but just wait til he wipes the floor with your boy in the debates ... I will revive this foolish thread of yours.

BTW ... how's the weather in Czeckoslovakia, Bob?

It's so sad, but if Obama ever said "Czeckoslovakia," it would be all over the media instantaneously, the 527's would be feverishly cranking out ads, and McCain would claim it's "proof Obama is not ready to lead." Where's the even-handed-ness and fair play? The media should be ROASTING McCain for his obvious lack of knowledge.

Let's see: One is an intellectual pacifist who is mildly prone to "uhhs."

The other is a senior citizen warmonger who can't read a tele-prompter and doesn't know a Sunni from a Shi'a.

Gosh ... I wonder who's better qualified to be president

Early in the primaries I sat and watched a Obama speech and was amazed. There are some I've seen since where you would think there were 2 different people speaking. I don't know that one was telepromptered or not. He may have just gotten flustered and was trying to regain his thoughts, not sure, but there's definitely times when Obama's not the speaker I saw the first time.

That being said, not everyone is perfect. Just myself a few others that I've met to date are. The ability I saw that first day though and on some occasions since do tell me he's not purely a product of a teleprompter when it comes to delivery, at least.

After eight years of Bush, it's nice that someone is raising the bar.
