Default College Advice

I have my daughter checking out colleges and scholarship opportunities. She's asking for advice and I don't have the answers. Problem is, I didn't attend college and have no idea what needs to happen and in what order.

Any advice is appreciated. She'll be senior this coming year and is currently 1st in her class of about 175 kids (remember, this is a small MT town).

depends what she wants to major in. though she will likely change her mind several times while in college.

I really hope my kids will be able to get into BYU. But that obviously doesn't work for everyone. And honestly, it's getting more and more difficult to get accepted there.

But BYU is a great school. I'm not a big fan of BYU sports (sorry, Kaylore). But the school is top notch, and a great college experience (if you're LDS).

It's a party school, though.

Curfews and no alcohol allowed and a school that preaches abstinence?

Yeah that sounds like a bundle of fun...

You couldn't go wrong Montana State in Bozeman. Same with UM in Missoula. Both great towns, great locations, and good schools. Also, travel South of you and hit up the University of Wyoming. Great school with tons of money with the great economy in Wyoming. I just graduated from UW last year. You can hardly find a better buy for your money. Plus, it's far enough away for her that she can meet new people and not keeping going to school with the same kids she has been for years.

im in college right now at Purdue and i love it. i would recommend a school with a big name because it pulls alot of weight in job markes and offers alot of opportunities, experiences and usually good sports programs, i would also recommend branching out from home a bit so that she can meet new people and not just take the easy road of going to school with all of her highschool friends.
Did she take the sat or act? if so what did she get?

Oh BYU is one that can be found. Pretty straight and narrow there.

As for college for your daughter clazyr. Find out what her interests are and also think about the fact that she is coming from a small town and small school. She might be better suited for a smaller college too.

They like to think so, but they wouldn't have to institute the strict curfew policies and visitor policies they're known for if they didn't have a typical party atmosphere to contend with.....not to mention, there are always off campus residences that are not subject to the same rules. Sure, it won't make Playboy's Top 10 Party School list any time soon, but I'm sure it's not too hard to find a "social gathering" on any given night.

29 on the ACT as a junior. No SAT yet (she took a preSAT or something).

Anybody know anything about scholarships? What are the procedures for finding out if a school will offer one?

Stupid questions I'm sure, but I'm hoping someone has had first hand experience (either as a student or a parent of one).

Its not hard to find a social gathering but I gurantee you there is not the partying you refer too. The Honor code is strictly enforced and I have had several friends attend that school and say there is pretty much zero colledge type parties.

She's talking about engineering of some kind but, as someone else said, she's A) a woman; and B) a teenager, so she'll probably change her mind on that one.

Thanks for the advice on the small school. Probably worth considering.

My wifes step-dad went to Montanna State, I believe, and got his Degree in Petroleum Engineering (could be named different though) he has done really well for himself.

But its not just that she is a girl or a teenager. She just is way to young to know what she wants to do period. She will probably change her mind about 8,876,906 times the first 2 years of college.

The difference between so-called elite schools and state schools is pretty negligible. No matter what your daughter did in highschool, she might find she does a lot better in college. Things to check out: make sure that the college has an "honors program" that she could earn her way into if she chooses (typically, better classes, with less work, better profs, smaller class sizes in such programs)--also check on avg. class size--this is important, the smaller the class the more she'll enjoy and benefit from the class. Lastly, make sure the college offers a wide variety of majors, because like others suggest she'll probably change her mind. I'd also look at college as way to live in a part of the country you've never been; there's no shame in taking student loans, and its better than her being bamboozled into a credit card the first year she's there. Good luck.

You can PM if you like, I'm getting my PhD at midwest school, so I might be able to answer her specific questions.

Edit: ugg, typos

Does her highschool have a counselor? It's their job to find out this information.

Once you both narrow down some schools; call up the school's admission office and ask them about it (or research their website). Scholarships are hard to get, but there are tons out there for students who are 1) First-generation college students 2) rural.
