Default First time father getting no sleep. Advice?

Our first child, a boy! was born June 12. Luke "The Moops." 7 lbs, 4 ounces. So cute he can't be my child.

It's week 3 and my wife and I are getting no sleep. We're Zombies. Any advice? How long will this last?!?

............ welcome to the war son, theirs no time for sleep here. Grab helmet, a rifle and get your @ss out there.

you got at least half a year of that. Me and the wife set a schedule like I wake up for the baby no matter what on Mon. Wed. Sat. She gets the other days

that way you get decent sleep every other day.

There's a book called 'Babywise'...buy it and follow it. Your wife will likely wimp out but it'll get your boy sleeping through the night relatively quickly.

You have to get em on a schedule play same time feed same time naps and sleep same time once they get use to it they sleep the night just fine unless something is wrong. Both my kids adjusted pretty fast and sleeping the nights before they were a month.

Congratulations and you'll adjust when you can. Take frequent naps with the kid and when they're old enough get one of those vibrating chairs... it's kryptonite for infants and gives you sleep and down time.

3 months... usually the caulic calms down at that point and the kiddos sleep more soundly at that point. During the first few months you just have to take turns with the wife.

Congratulations. No disrespect, but one of you ought to be out of the equation here... and only one of you is considered a natural "nurturer".

Congrats. It took us about 6 weeks and if there is breastfeeding going on, you should be sleeping through it to get some rest (Dad's can nurture pretty well if they aren't affraid of it though). You are of little help if you are a zoombie as well. We realized that after about 2 weeks. Be carefull with Babywise the book, while it has a good overall message, some of the details are a bit much IMO.

Just to clarify by nurture, I meant calming, cuddling etc... obviously only mom can breastfeed.

You can milk just about anything with nipples.

I have nipples, Greg, could you milk me?

That is, 100% naturally... There are enough whack jobs in the world someone's felt the need to manufacture an apparatus that takes mommy's breast milk syphoned into said apparatus and "simulates" the effect of breast feeding for daddy... No wonder there are so many disturbed people in the world.

My wife and I would alternate 5-6 hour shifts at night. She would go to bed early, and I would nap/take care of the baby as needed in the living room until about 3 am. Then we'd trade. At that point I'd just go to bed and sleep through until the morning.

Our oldest is 23 months and our youngest is 8 months. Both of them were sleeping in a crib by 4 months. Until you get to that point, its tough for sure. Divide and conquer. I had a lot of luck with a vibrating bouncer chair. Something like this:

I would strap the baby in and rock the chair with my foot. I got to where I could do it half-asleep. It would put both of my kids right to sleep... or at least make them stop crying unless they were hungry.

And if yoiu guys are breastfeeding, have mom pump regularly and store as much as possible in the freezer. It will save you a ton of money down the road if you have a big stockpile.

Also remember that each baby is different. Some of the advice we got worked, some didn't. Ours was in her crib at week 4 and won't sleep (at night) in the same room as us. Why? I stopped asking that question at 6 weeks.

I second this! You HAVE to buy this book and follow it religiously. My wife and I have 2 kids (ages 3.5 and 2 yrs told)...this book saved our sanity. You can get it for $2.50 used on amazon.com. The link is below:

Do yourself a favor and get it. Congrats and good luck!!

Great advice. Thanks. I'll checkout "babywise."

The other thing I can't get over is how much he poops and pees, usually the momement I change his diaper. I can open up that diaper and there isn't much there, then the fireworks and watershows blast off. Multiple aerial pees, projectile poops -- in that cool Col. Mustard color too.

Sorry for being so graphic, but I'm guessing you've all gone through this.

It gets better. I have a 6 month old and she is only getting up once a night.
