Don't know why WSJ is an authority, but what are your thoughts? IMO there should be more hockey and soccer players. |

looks like they purposefully didn't repeat sports, otherwise the list would probably have been dominated decathaletes and the like.

Christiano Ronaldo is probably the best athlete in world football right now. It's hard to choose in world football because there are so many great athletes in so many places. |

A-rod, really? He may be a good ball player, but I can think of at least 12 more "athletic" baseball players off the top of my head.

Yeah, and cross country skiing is hard too, I don't see any of those guys. Just because it's good exercise, doesn't make it compelling or gritty entertainment. All SOCCER is, is a tradition. A boring one at that. I played it for 10 years, I know.

I played it competitively for 18 years. I love it. Just because you dont understand how people enjoy it doesnt give you the right to claim authority. It's the greatest sport on the planet. The world agrees with me...not with you. |

Bah, Sid's not the most athletic NHLer! Craziest skilled, yes. But I would be more tempted to say one of the agile two way power forwards like Iginla or Thornton, or possibly a D-man who logs 35+ minutes a game. 3 or 4 years ago it would have been Bertuzzi hands down

The world also thinks all americans weigh 300 pounds and can't spell their names. I like to think the majority is just a way of saying popular opinion, not fact. just because more people watch soccer, doesn't mean a damn thing to me. Enjoy your three hours of scoreless tie. You earned it.

soccer sucks monkey balls .... it is like hockey minus the one thing that i think is a skill in either sport , the skating . it is like someone came along and said boy how can we make hockey even more unwatchable and some french guy most likely came up with playing it in the summer on grass not ice and lets take out all the violence cause we can't have that ... thank god in America we are so Ad driven that it can't be played on TV much cause there is not enuff stopages for ads and it just don't work ...

There are also kids in china bouncing basketballs on dirt. Kids in Canada tossing a pigskin on a frozen pond, whats your point? That poor people play soccer? I'd rather watch a three hour hanna montana marathon without commercial interruption (or salvation), then 20 euro's running around faking injuries. Besides, if soccer is so much fun to watch, then why are they burning down thier stadiums in boredom during the games. they sing, get drunk and throw things. Anything to not have to come to the realization that the game they paid to get into is boring as all hell.

Lets see...so the most excited, passionate fans in the world go to the games because they are boring? That's probably one of the most egregious examples of loony logic I have seen on this board, and that's saying alot. |

i seen a whole show on why Soccer isn't taking hold like wished in America and the way it is set ABC NBC and CBS hated it cause they didn't get enuff ad time outa it .... there is ways around that of course cause they do ad free tv sometimes on the big 3 and it is just brought to you by companies who take during the game scrolls and splash graphics insted of commercials .... but the big three just aint into it ..

Having played sSccer, Football, Basketball and run track while growing up, I can say that SOCCER was the most physically demanding because of the constant running, and physicality of gaining position for the ball and the inability to use your hands. Football is certainly #2 with Bball and track tied at #3 in my personal experience. When you go to even an MLS match you see the physicality of the sport and it makes you appreciate the core strength that these athletes possess while perfoming tasks such as dribbling, crossing the ball, playing a lob with their head or chest, etc. Soccer is greatness and I hope to someday be able to attend a World cup game. PS--as a caveat, Golf is NOT a sport--it is like dart throwing or clay shooting, it takes coordination and dedication but that's it. If there is no running involved, it is NOT a sport.

you forgot also the most desperate for entertainment ... who get over excited over people running back and forth for 2 hours to the point they throw road flares at players and riot to they kill one another .... All for a sport where you can't tell when they score if it was ment to happen or just a accident ... just like hockey ...

Its no wonder that ESPiN has tried to avoid the sport for years and have had their talking heads badmouth it incessantly. In an increasingly global market, they are having to give the sport time. |
