Default NFL Greatest Games Series: Denver Broncos Greatest Games

3 DVD set coming out in August. To be honest I am a little pissed about this considering the Packers have a 10 DVD set coming out at the same time and only 1 of those games is a non Favre game. Anyway, it will be nice to have these 3 games in full and in perfect quality:

Super Bowl XXXII
Super Bowl XXXIII
1977 AFC Championship

3 games? That's pretty weak. Sadly they'll still get my money, but 3 games is pathetic.

I can think of so many games that were better than Super Bowl XXIII. I guess they kind of have to put it in there, but if you look at it objectively it was actually pretty boring.

The Book of John

Elway has created an absolute masterpiece of a career

By ADAM SCHEFTER
As published in print Dec. 21, 1998

Bronco QB
John Elway
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — For 16 NFL seasons, he has written his own little inspirational masterpiece. It is the Book of John.
Sprinkled throughout Bronco QB John Elway’s NFL career, there are funny chapters, sad chapters, ironic chapters, courageous chapters — a compilation of chapters that make for some kind of football classic. With the book slowly nearing an end, Pro Football Weekly recently decided to document the seven most memorable moments of No. 7’s Hall of Fame career.
Seven’s heaven, if you will.
But, before charting those moments, one must ask, just as it is asked in the Book of John, in John 3:9, "How can these things be?"
All these touchdowns, comebacks, wins and thrills. Years later, still nobody knows.
1. The Dive / Jan. 25, 1998

During Super Bowl XXXII, Elway’s self-proclaimed "three-inch vertical leap" never took him so far. With the game tied at 17 and Denver facing a 3rd-and-6 at the Green Bay 12, Elway dropped back, found nobody open and took off for a first down and the Broncos’ first world championship. Before Elway could get there, right near the first-down marker, Packer Pro Bowl SS LeRoy Butler hit him. Elway went up in the air like a propeller and came down, feet forward, as he absorbed another shot from S Mike Prior. It was the kill shot. Yet Elway had the first down, and he had the game. He jumped up like a little boy, not a 37-year-old quarterback. He pumped his fists. He grabbed the momentum. And, two plays later, Bronco RB Terrell Davis ran one yard for the touchdown that gave Denver a 24-17 lead.
"As soon as I saw John do that, I knew the game was ours," Davis said.
And it was, indeed, their game. Broncos 31, Packers 24.
"This is 10 times better than I ever imagined it would be," Elway said with his wife, kids and dad all within arm’s length of one more happy hug. It was only fitting how it all worked out. The quarterback and the Broncos were both born in the ’60’s. A generation later, Denver and its favorite athlete shared their first Super Bowl title together. The quarterback was so happy he cried.
2. The Drive / Jan. 11, 1987

There’s a reason that Elway is the second-most disliked person in Cleveland, right behind Art Modell. The reason: the Drive. After Brown QB Bernie Kosar threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Brian Brennan to move Cleveland into a 20-13 lead and within five minutes and 43 seconds of the city’s first trip to the Super Bowl, the ensuing kickoff rolled to Denver’s two-yard line, where Gene Lang fell on it. Elway trotted onto the field, into the huddle and shouted to his teammates, loud enough to be heard over the barks coming from the Dawg Pound, "We got ’em right where we want ’em." Apparently, he did. Elway drove the Broncos 98 yards, throwing a five-yard touchdown pass to Mark Jackson with 39 seconds left. The Broncos won in overtime, when Rich Karlis kicked a 33-yard field goal.
"It was funny in a way because, after having been so intense throughout the drive, I remember thinking to myself as I threw the pass to Mark, ‘No problem,’ like it was a scrimmage or something," Elway recalled. Only it wasn’t a scrimmage. It was one of the first, and most compelling, chapters in the Book of John.
3. The Pass / Nov. 22, 1998

Colorado has an Eisenhower Tunnel, a Pikes Peak and, now, an Elway Pass. It came against the Raiders this past November. It came on the most memorable five-yard completion of Elway’s career. And it gave him 50,000 NFL passing yards, putting Elway in elite company with Miami’s Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks ever to go over the 50K mark. The milestone was so important to Elway that it was one of the reasons he returned for this season, his 16th in the NFL. The funny thing about it was that, for a while, it seemed as though he might not get it. He needed 42 passing yards against San Diego at Mile High Stadium in Week 10, but, because his ribs were throbbing, he could only get 12. He could not play the next week at Kansas City. And there were questions as to whether he would be able to play against Oakland. But Elway did. And, on his third completion of the game, a five-yarder to WR Willie Green, Elway passed the mark he once thought unattainable.
"The last 30 yards seemed to take longer than the first 49,970," Elway said. It was so important that Green retrieved the ball from the official, carried it back to Elway and offered it to him along with a congratulatory message. Elway grabbed the money ball and ran to the sideline, clutching it in his right hand, waving it to the crowd. The 75,325 fans at Mile High Stadium stood and cheered.
4. The Overdrive / Jan. 4, 1992

For nearly 58 minutes, the Oilers dominated the game. They led 14-0, then 21-6, before pinning the Broncos at their own two-yard line with 2:07 left and a 24-23 lead.
"I was thinking, ‘We’ve won this game. John Elway is not going to drive 98 yards on us,’ " former Oiler CB Cris Dishman said after the game. And, on two occasions, it looked as if Dishman might be right. First, the Broncos faced a 4th-and-6 on their 28. The pocket was collapsing, and Denver’s receivers were blanketed, so Elway had no choice: He ran. And gained seven yards and a first down. Then, the Broncos faced a 4th-and-10 on their 35. Again the pocket was collapsing, and Denver’s receivers were blanketed, so Elway improvised: He scrambled. A cornerback, fearing another first-down scramble, came up to tackle him. So Elway lofted a pass to WR Vance Johnson for 44 yards. With 16 seconds remaining, PK David Treadwell nailed the 28-yard field goal that sent Denver to the AFC championship game and Houston into a depression. "That last drive," former Oiler QB Warren Moon said, shaking his head, "was a classic, huh?"
5. The Double Clutch / Oct. 4, 1992

Things were bleaker than ever. Denver had gone 12 quarters without scoring a single touchdown. And now, with five minutes to go against Marty Schottenheimer and his Chiefs, the Broncos trailed 19-6. This time it seemed like there was no way for Elway. But then he drove the Broncos 80 yards, throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Mark Jackson with 1:55 left. Then, after Kansas City’s offense stumbled, Denver got the ball back with 1:17 left.
"Plenty of time," Elway said, and, for him, it is. Just 39 seconds later, Elway threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Vance Johnson. The team that had gone 12 quarters without a single touchdown, more than 180 minutes without reaching the endzone, scored two in the final two minutes.
"I thought I had seen everything," Bronco owner Pat Bowlen said after the game. "But I think I’ve seen it all now."
6. The Double Clutch II / Dec. 6, 1998

With 8:25 remaining in the game and their then-undefeated season, the Broncos trailed Kansas City 31-21. Again, they needed two scores against the Chiefs. And, again, they were able to do it. First, Elway threw a 50-yard pass to Green that set up Davis’ one-yard touchdown run. Then, with 3:34 left, Elway threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to TE Shannon Sharpe. The second score gave the Broncos a 35-31 lead (which turned out to be the final score) and Elway the second 400-yard passing day of his career. He had rallied to shoot down Schottenheimer again, the ninth such comeback, all of which started with the Drive. "No. 7," Bronco WR Rod Smith said of Elway, "is a bad dude. I mean, a really bad dude."
7. The Win- Mon Night @ Miami.

Heading into Denver’s Week 16 Monday-night game at Miami, Elway had won 147 regular-season games, more than any other NFL quarterback ever has. And isn’t that what the game is all about, winning? And isn’t that what Elway and all of his seven most memorable moments are all about?
That, more than anything, is the book on John. That is the Book of John.

Couldn't agree more. In terms of the "greatest" Broncos games, really only 2 of these apply (XXXII, and 77 AFC Championship). Super Bowl XXXIII was cool and all, but the outcome was never in doubt. It was more a saying goodbye to Elway.

Here are some games that they could have incuded:

Any of Elway's 47 comebacks
1973 MNF vs Raiders
77 Regular season games vs Raiders
1979 Seattle @ Denver (the most unreal comeback by Craig Morton)
1985 vs San Diego (blocked fg to win in ot)
The Drive
The Fumble
The Drive II
The Revenge Tour (1997 Playoffs)
1998 vs Chiefs to go 13-0

The list goes on and on for what they could have included. Let's just say I am very happy that I have collected a lot of these games via the Game trading hobby.

Elway's comeback at home against Warren Moon's Oilers is the game I'd want most...

I already have SB 32...and SB 33 was sort of a snoozer...doesn't help that the biggest play of SB 33 was partially cut off due to poor broadcast coverage...

I think the 1988 MNF game vs the Bears was one worth putting on there. You also have the snow game vs Green Bay in 1984 (didnt come down to the end though) but one of my favorites was from the 1997 season at Arrowhead in the playoffs.

No kidding.

I imagine Super Bowl wins are "automatic", and they wanted to include something pre-Elway. I wanted the Drive, and the Oiler game as well.

I wish I could find my VHS of Elway's Greatest Come from behind victories I bought at King Soopers when I was like 12. It was a good flick, however I don't know how to use a VCR anymore.

I'm actually surprised they'd include something from the pre-Elway era, thankful for it, but surprised nonetheless.

Still, that's one real skimpy collection....Most probably have the Super Bowls on tape anyways, so just rent it for the 77 AFC Championship game.

I have a copy of the 77 game but its pretty crappy. I'm curious if they retouched this one.

I realize that. But since it says three games for the Packers (and two discs, just like us, in the description) we may not be getting shortchanged.

Yeah, that is incorrect. The Packers actually let their fans vote from a list of 20 what they wanted in the box of 10. I was praying they would do the same for the Broncos, but no luck:

i would also like to have the game where clinton portis ran all over the chiefs and wore a "championship" belt...

also i'd like to see the playoff games of the 97 & 98 seasons leading up to the SB...

the revenge game against Jax and the blowout of the Dolphins...

the AFC championship game against the steelers...

all great games to watch...

How about 96 Dallas Vs. Denver?
SD Vs. Den, the block FG in OT for the win.
Hou Vs. Den, Elway does it again.
The Playoff route of the Dolphins 98(Mainly cuz my wife and her family are Dolphins fan).

I wish they would have put together a better set. We are getting robbed. 10 DVD's for the price of 3 DVD's, GB fans got to be happy.
