Wearing the Internet

MIT's developed a way to surf the web on a piece of paper, your shirt sleeve, or even your skin. An internet-enabled phone projects onto any surface, while a web cam even records your movements and let's you interact with the "virtual" screen.

"A mere $350 of off-the-shelf components and suddenly the glass window at Macy’s, your car door, or your arm become a computer display," notes this article (which includes some amazing pictures from MIT's Scott Ogden.)

"Wave your hand and the Rolex materializes on your arm... Use your fingers and thumb to create a picture frame and snap a photo... Open the palm of your hand and suddenly your calendar and phone list overlay your life line."

SHOULD you ever travel back in time to ancient Rome and you get a headache while you're there, you might want to just grin and bear it. If you visit a doctor, he will likely go to his saltwater tank, carefully scoop up an electric fish, and press it to your forehead in the hope of shocking the headache out of you.

This is one of the examples Andrew Koob uses to guide us through the history of the brain, showing how, when it comes to understanding our own grey matter, we are so easily led astray.

Japanese researchers Masaki Kobayashi and Daisuke Kikuchi from the Tohoku Institute of Technology, along with Hitoshi Okamura explained the story behind these wonderful images:

The human body literally glimmers. The intensity of the light emitted by the body is 1000 times lower than the sensitivity of our naked eyes. Ultraweak photon emission is known as the energy released as light through the changes in energy metabolism. We successfully imaged the diurnal change of this ultraweak photon emission with an improved highly sensitive imaging system using cryogenic charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. We found that the human body directly and rhythmically emits light.

Could u txt me ur blood sample?

In the developed world, we take camera phones for granted as ways to record our lives – but in poorer countries they could be used to save lives, say bioengineers. The US team has designed a portable microscope that straps to a camera phone and can be used to diagnose potentially fatal diseases in blood and sputum samples.

And Now… Desperate People to Work for Free
July 20th, 2009

Via: Reuters:

With U.S. unemployment at a 20-year high, some Americans are working for free while looking for a job, but experts are split over whether it is a sign of dedication or desperation.

Unpaid job seekers can keep their resumes fresh by boosting their experience and learning new skills, experts say, but others warn businesses may take advantage of the jobless and that it is illegal for commercial companies not to pay workers.

Vision shift glasses alter time perception:

There's an intriguing study about to be published in Psychological Science finding that people wearing prism glasses that shift everything to the right overestimate the passage of time, while people wearing left-shift glasses underestimate it.

Grow Your Own Skyscraper

By Philip Bethge

Three young German architects are designing structures made completely out of living trees, including a pavilion for concerts in downtown Stuttgart. But designing the ultimate treehouse turns out to be trickier than one might expect.

Are these dates corrected for julian calendar or is it only the numerical phenomenon of July 22? I have to say that 11 events in about 630 years is not that impressive.

Los Pozas Surreallist Follies
A park of dream-like sculptures and architectural follies in the Mexican jungle

The surreal folly gardens at Xilitla were created by Edward James, an eccentric British millionaire and patron of the arts. Set into 80 acres of jungle, he and his builders spent 25 years and millions of dollars creating a nature inspired fantasy in concrete.

Edward James began his life in the sheltered luxury of the English upper class. He attended Eton and Oxford, and later became a great supporter and collector of surrealist art, sponsoring both Dali and Magritte in the 1930s. His English home Monkton House is also a dedicated surrealist fantasy. His role as a patron of the arts put him in touch with luminaries of his times, including Dylan Thomas, Sigmund Freud, DH Lawrence, and Aldous Huxley. Huxley introduced him to Hollywood types, who in turn introduced him to spiritualist, surrealist, west coast visionaries, who then introduced him to the wilds of Mexico. A great lover of plants and animals, he was immediately attracted to he jungles of Mexico by the lush vegetation and the leisurely pace.

Works of art in and of themselves, these ancient maps reveal a great deal more than the geographical knowledge of our ancestors. They tell stories of war and triumph, reveal myths and biases, and document modes of thought that have long been obsolete.
