Default Obama says "Everybody should be bilingual..."

Quote:
"When it comes to second-language learners, the most important thing is not to get bogged down in ideology, but figure out what works," Obama says. "Everybody should be bilingual, or everybody should be trilingual."

So let me get this right. We have tons of illegals running around that can't speak English and Obama is worried about the English speakers learning another language? It's great to be bilingual but I would rather have Obama, McCain talk about fitness more then language. What we need is to lose about 400-500 million pounds as a country.

They then asked Bush the same question and he went on some tangeant about some experiences he had back in his younger days with "the bilinguals" and said that it was fine to be bilingual, so long as it was limited to just experimentation in college.

I do like how Obama mentioned art and music in his speach. Too often schools spend all the money on sports and not enough on the arts.

The schools should really start pushing fitness and the arts along with the regular Math, Science, English, History

Well most European countries require their students to learn a second language. Usually that being English. But many students take latin as well as its influence is in many languages.

So in that matter I agree with him. But America is not surrounded by the numberous countries that europe is. So I see the other side of the coing too.

Nothing wrong with being bi-lingual. I learned german while attending HS in europe.

I just wish I had learned spanish, considering the influx of hispanics into our country.

Does Ebonics count?

Seriously, I believe people should be fluent in more than one language. What I don't want is government *mandating* learning a second language. Let it be voluntary.

This is the basic difference between liberty and socialism.

Obama is a socialist.

Bush is a puppet. He is quite the fiscal liberal, though, by all appearances.

Perhaps you could point out just where in Obama's quote he says learning a second language should be compulsory?

too funny. Everyone is up in arms over only english being spoken here. Yet when you go to other countries, there are always signs in English.Get over yourself people. Who gives a rat's ass if people want to learn other languages, all it does is give them an instant job qualification.Look at countries like India who teach english as a second language and are kicking our asses when it comes to education. I bet you would all support teaching religion though huh? the new thing is calling smart people "etilist" to cover up for dumb people. Bravo.

WTF? How can any descent person have a problem with the notion that our children should speak more than one language.

Clearly, he's including Spanish-speaking only people in this--as they two would need to be bilingual--I guess the neocons could argue that Obama wants them to learn French.

I think it's a great idea for everyone to be fluent in more than one language. It opens up whole new worlds. I took a few years of Spanish and I want to go back and take classes and get fluent. Some of my favorite writers write in Spanish. I'd like to read the originals instead of translations. Spanish is a beautiful language to listen to as well. I especially like the rolled Rs. I remember watching a twenty something conducter on a train in Switzerland walking up and down the aisle and speaking to passengers fluently in Italian, German, French, and when he got to us, perfect English. I'd love to be able to do that. Latin and Greek would be nice too.

I submit that the public education system teach English. It certainly doesn't do that anymore.

The man can't even speak the English language.

I'm all for people wanting to learn a second language. Being educated opens the world and opportunities to people but it is sadly taken for granted in this country lately and other countries are beginning to out do us in that area. It may be our demise. I don't want anything mandated though and I don't believe Obama even inferred that. Couldn't agree more on the fitness part. We've become lazy on so many levels.
