The draft was much more watchable and enjoyable with the cut down times. I think that they should still start the first round in the morning just like they used to instead of 3 PM EST but overall it was much better.

Agreed. I think they could easily go back to three rounds on day one with the earlier Sat start time you spoke of.

12 central would be good start time. Liked the 10 min format. There were still trades.
If you know your board and are prepped 10 min should be enough. |

I thought the decision to shorten the time between picks was great, but why only 2 rounds on day one? 3 rounds then 4 rounds would make more sense.

They made the move for a few reasons. Ratings info showed there was a significant drop in viewer ship after the first two rounds (with round 3 and day 2 being broadcast on ESPN2). Also, by moving the 3rd round to day 2, they gave NFL teams a bit of an advantage in negotiating with 3rd round picks, as they could not be classified as 2nd day selections. Finally, this year was viewed as a "test" year in many retrospects. Roger Goodell pointed out that the 1st round saw as many trades as last year despite the reduced time limit, the later start time was to project how the draft would preform in prime time (although Saturday is hardly considered prime viewing). Why is all of this being done? Essentially, the NFL has learned that the draft has become a huge event and would like to better capitalize on it. There are already rumblings that the event could go up for bidding among NFL cities annually, and if the NFL can further shorten the 1st round to 5-7 minutes, between picks; don't be surprised if the league eventually tries to move the 1st round to real prime time (i.e. Monday or Thursday night at 8pm). If the league can accomplish this, and wait out ESPN's contract to cover the draft (if they even have one, I don't know), the NFL would love to have the exclusive broadcast rights to the 1st round of the draft in prime time as a bargaining chip in its ongoing struggle with cable networks.

It was much better, except for the fact that both ESPN and NFL Network went to commercial every goddamned time the Broncos were on the clock.

Pacing was good but they should start it at 12:00 pm Eastern.

I loved the draft this year compared to last...Also, NFL Network is wayyyyyyy better to watch compared to ESPN and their Round Table BS. Gimme a break.

Even with the time cut down between picks, there was a record number of trades during the draft this year. Good move by the NFL.

Adding Naked Chicks between picks would make this, and all shows, better.
At the least they should invite the Oakland raider cheerleaders to perform like Jerry Lewis used to on his telethon in the 70's in between "Send in the clowns". |

Instead or Roger Goodell or Gene Washington announcing the picks, they should have one of team's cheerleaders - in their sideline gear - making the announcement. It could make for some real humor when somebody with a Polish or Nigerian name get selected.

They need to start earlier so the reporters would still be waking up and wouldn't report the first half of the draft. Between what was already reported and what could be easily foreseen, it took until pick 7 before anyone was even slightly suprised.
As for the commercials, conveniently they didn't go on commercial too often at the same time. I toughed my way through a bit of ESPN to cover those breaks. They need to actually focus on the 2nd day picks though... If I'm hardcore/dumb enough to tune in for day 2 of the NFL draft... it's probably because I still care about who's being drafted there. If I just wanted a "last 5 picks" segment, I could periodically pop up the draft tracker on nfl.com. I tuned in because I want player by player breakdown in the 5 mins until the next pick... and I want the pick as it happened. Many things can be tweaked still, but shorter times are definitely better. After the first 15 or so picks, teams started sitting on the clock again. The early picks rolled right along. |
