Default Denver Essentially got Robertson for nothing.

I apologize if I missed this in the past 30 Dwayne Robertson threads but just in case I posted it again.

Shanahan: Robertson would have flunked physical
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 04/25/2008 12:35:02 PM MDT

When it comes to winning in the NFL, the case of Dewayne Robertson proves physical examinations can be evaluated any way a team chooses.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said at his pre-draft press conference today that Robertson's knee did not pass the physical taken by team doctors. The Broncos acquired the defensive tackle from the New York Jets, anyway, in exchange for essentially nothing.

"He would have flunked our test over the last four years," Shanahan said. "But he's played over the last four years. The last two years, he's played 77 percent of the time. So we were willing to take the risk."

If Robertson plays in less than 65 percent of the defensive plays in 2008, the Broncos will not have to give the Jets a 2009 draft pick. The Jets will get a 2009 conditional draft pick in the unlikely event Robertson is on the field for more than 65 percent of the plays.

The Broncos use an eight-man rotation up front so it's unlikely any defensive lineman, much less Robertson, will play two-thirds of the snaps.
Elvis Dumervil was the only Broncos lineman who played 70 percent of the defensive snaps last season, but that was partly because of injuries to two other defensive ends, Ebenezer Ekuban and Jarvis Moss.

Robertson is expected to start at defensive tackle alongside Marcus Thomas, but veteran Alvin McKinley will rotate in. The Jets were going to release Robertson prior to his $3 million roster bonus due date of June 3, so any conditional pick was better than nothing. A Jets trade with Cincinnati earlier this offseason for Robertson was nixed because Bengals physicians flunked him.

Yet, despite the condition of Robertson's knee, he played in every game the past two seasons and all but three games in his five-year career.

"He's had this coming out of college," Shanahan said. "So when you play as many years as he has and the percentage, you're willing to take the risk. Obviously the contract will dictate that."

The Broncos restructured Robertson's deal so that his multiyear contract would include roughly $4 million guaranteed.

As for the NFL Draft that begins Saturday, Shanahan indicated his team's need at offensive tackle could be addressed with their No. 42 overall pick in the second round instead of with their No. 12 selection in the first round.

"You can always have more depth, especially when a guy like Matt Lepsis retires," Shanahan said about his starting tackle the previous nine seasons. "But the question you're talking about is do you value some guy in the second round that's pretty close to the first round? So can you go in another direction in the first round? Those are questions I think every team asks themselves. It's kind of nice to have the 42nd pick, though, instead of the 60th pick. There's a lot of athletes that go in that second round, especially early."

So Basically because of our rotation Denver get him without having to wait to have him be released and on the open market. That is a pretty shrewd move.

I was just about to post that too.

Also leaves it up in the air whether we take an OT in the 1st or not. Not that you can think that Shanahan is tipping his hand or anything, but I don't think OT is a lock in the 1st as most mocks seem to have it. If they do like a guy like Sam Baker almost as much as those 1st round OT's, maybe they try to get him in the 2nd and go w/ BPA in the first ... which could be Stewart or Mendenhall.

And to the people screaming about his bone on bone he has had it since school and he has played more than any DT we have had the last 3 years. Only person who played as much as Robertson last year in Denver was Dumervile.

Wow. 65% of plays or else no compensation. That's crazy.

Awesome deal Shanny.

It makes me wonder what Sundquist would have given up. Since he was the one who designed all the major trades around here. Yes Mike signed off but maybe he just wasn't a good negotiator.

Yeah... but giving up a balloon full of air is exceptional.

Does this guy ever not fleece people in trades?

He said the exact same thing 5 minutes later about running back. Really good class.... great depth... could be addressed in 2nd round.

You won't see Telluride and Wolf4Life making out in this thread. Shanny pulled off a nice "trade" and I use the term lightly to get a proven effective DT. No doom and gloom here.

I didn't mean to smack Sundquist. Just wondering aloud that if he was critisized for his drafts, moves, and what not what would he had offered to give up.

Or Mendenhall, Stewart...the franchise RB Shanny has been looking for.

Especially if he thinks he can get an OL in the second round that will fill our needs. (see quote above) Unfortunately, I now think this is his plan, and fits his profile. Although he has never drafted RB in the first round before I think he thinks he doesn't get another 12 or higher draft slot next year, and there is a big group of quality OT prospects next year too. He moved up to get the QB a few years ago, and now he is in position to grab a top RB at our position.

The only question will be if Mendenhall or Stewart are already gone. (VERY unlikely)
