Default Broncos entertaining idea of trading down

Sources: Broncos entertaining idea of trading down for draft
By The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 04/22/2008 11:49:31 PM MDT

Once the Buffalo Bills make their choice at No. 11 during the NFL draft Saturday, the Broncos will have 10 minutes to decide what to do with the No. 12 selection.

Not making a pick remains a strong possibility.

According to two NFL sources, the Broncos continue to explore trading down from No. 12. As of Tuesday, no deal was imminent, and executing a draft-pick deal during their 10-minute slot won't be easy. But the Broncos will try.

Logical trade partners would be the Houston Texans, who have the No. 18 pick, and the Dallas Cowboys, who have two first-round selections: Nos. 22 and 28.

Moving down from No. 12 is one of two potential trades the Broncos are discussing before the draft begins at 1 p.m. Saturday with commissioner
Roger Goodell announcing the Miami Dolphins have used their No. 1 pick to select left tackle Jake Long.

The other potential Broncos deal would be for defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson. Trade talks with the New York Jets for Robertson have been inert in recent weeks but are not dead.

The Jets had been seeking two draft picks in exchange for Robertson, who also has drawn interest from Philadelphia.

The Broncos won't surrender nearly that much, because they believe the Jets' intention is to release Robertson before he is due a $3 million roster bonus June 3, which in turn would essentially trigger a $6.8 million salary for 2008.

The Broncos were in a similar situation last month with Javon Walker. They tried to trade the wide receiver before a large roster bonus was due but wound up releasing him because no team would surrender a draft pick.

Plan B.

The Broncos wouldn't be overly disappointed if they were unable to trade their No. 12 pick.

The players they are considering for that spot include running backs Jonathan Stewart of Oregon and Illinois' Rashard Mendenhall; offensive tackles Ryan Clady of Boise State, Virginia's Branden Albert, Vanderbilt's Chris Williams, and Boston College's Gosder Cherilus; and Miami safety Kenny Phillips.

Williams was a college teammate of Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler's.

Paymah holding.

As a precaution against the slight possibility of a draft-day trade, Broncos cornerback Karl Paymah will wait until after the draft before signing the team's tender of $927,000.

Waiting until after the draft, when trades are more likely, is a common tactic among restricted free agents. Paymah doesn't want to be traded, and teams cannot deal players who are not officially under contract.

That little tidbit about Paymah....does that mean that Foxy wants to get traded because he signed his tender before the draft!!!

I think its more that Foxworth is open to being traded, not so much actively seeking it, while Paymah would like to remain a Bronco another season.

Sweet! Paymah wants to stay a Bronco. He is a better CB than Foxworth, Hopefully we can get a 3rd for Foxworth.

I think the Allen trade might make the possiblity of Clady at 12 if KC goes for Vernon G.

I think the trade gives them some flexibility. They may be even more inclined to get a LT 5th and then with the Vikes pick draft Merling. Or as you suggested, get VG and them somebody like Cherilus, or Otah or Williams if they slip, at 17.

I think the Chiefs made a good trade here. Too bad for their fans that they will now do something stupid.

1. Its only logical if Dallas has a reason to trade up. We've discussed this numerous times here dating back several months. Welcome to 3 months ago, Klis.

2. It has since been reported that Robertson visited the Eagles a month ago. Once again, way to be timely, Klis.

This is the best this guy can do?

Yeah, it would kind of annoy me too as I'd assume they'd be drafting him with the thought of DJ bolting next season. But if DJ has a great season again at WLB, then they'll have to resign him, leaving a guy like Rivers with no job. Just ask Terry Pierce.

A rumor is floating around down here that Dallas wants Mendenhall and is interested in trading up with Denver to get him. I think it's a smokescreen but that's what's going around.
