Default Broncos collecting receivers

April 15, 2008 1:06 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson
It doesn't look like the Broncos will fill their receiver need in the early rounds of the draft. The team signed former Kansas City receiver Sami Parker to a one-year deal on Monday and are known to be seriously talking with former Seattle and San Francisco receiver Darrell Jackson and could secure him by mid week if there are no breakdowns in talks.
The Broncos are making these moves because they want as many veteran receivers as they can get. The team signed Keary Colbert from Carolina on the second day of free agency and return No. 1 receiver Brandon Marshall and No. 3 receiver Brandon Stokley. Veteran Javon Walker was released and then signed a huge deal with AFC West rival Oakland.
There is a school of thought that Denver signed Parker and is close to inking Jackson because of Marshall's arm injury. He suffered major damage to his right forearm in a March accident when he went through a glass entertainment center. The team expects Marshall to be ready in the preseason. Those in the know say this recent run on receivers is more to do with depth than concern about Marshall who is expected to make a full recovery.
The Broncos are looking for a No. 2 receiver and if Jackson signs, he'll likely compete with Colbert for the starting slot opposite of Marshall with Stokley staying the No. 3 and Parker providing insurance.
There are questions marks about all of Denver's receivers other than Marshall, assuming he gets healthy and can stay out of trouble. Colbert's production dropped off considerably in Carolina after a big rookie season in 2004. Stokley, who'll be 32 in June, hasn't stayed healthy for an entire season since 2004. Jackson's production slipped in his one season with the 49ers, in 2007, as he had 46 catches. However, when healthy in Seattle, he was a legitimate playmaker.
Denver is clearly stockpiling players with the hopes of finding some key contributors and perhaps one who could put together a 50-60 catch season as a complement to Marshall. With quarterback Jay Cutler in love with the idea of using tight end Tony Scheffler often, there could end up by an interesting competition for Cutler's attention in Denver in 2008.

thanks heav good read...

if we do sign d-jack then i'm convinced that we won't go WR one day one of the draft...

which means we may go best available at #42... which will be possibly LB or DT...or RB...

i still believe we go OT with the #12 pick unless a stud falls in our lap (Ellis)...

Thanks for the info.

This is been what I've been talking about, Marshall and Schef are going to be getting a lot of balls. We need a WR to get around 40 to 50 catches top. If we draft Mendenhall, he can catch balls out of the backfield we become VERY dangerous.

our shotgun 5 wide is going to be quite formidable.

B-Marsh, Stokes, Colbert, Scheff, and some rotation of parker and jackson.

A lot of stuff to defend on the field at once

I think stokley is still one of the best slot recievers in the league..he is average as a number 2 but at the 3 he's top 10..scheff is a big target over the middle..if he can go a full season without an injury i think he'll gain a lot of attention...reminds me of Todd Heap!

I agree--now if we can just find some tackles to keep Merriman, etc. off of our Franchise QB---we will REALLY have something

That would be a great problem for this offense to have. Cutler with too many options. That would mean someone is always open and the offense is racking up yardage and points

What does anyone think of drafting Mario Urrutia out of Louisville in the 4th or 5th?
He seems like he could be a monster like Marshall. Imagine having both your number 1 and 2 receivers at around 6'5" and 230lbs with good hands strength and speed. Defenses would lose their minds covering them both.

I know we need a burner who can stretch the field but I would be very happy with 2 big tall strong guys who dwarf opposing DB's

Line Cutler up in slot, Direct snap to D Jackson who throws to Cutler who, surrounded by a pocket made from castoff WR's, then throws to Marshall.

Run that 80 plays a game!

Brandon will be completely healed before training camp. In fact, his arm will be better than before. There is no need to worry. Read nothing into the desparate signings of late.

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson left no room for doubt Wednesday: He wants out of Cincinnati as fast as possible and he doesn't plan on reporting for any future Bengal function -- mandatory or voluntary.
I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible. I don't intend on reporting to anything.

--Chad Johnson

What spurred Johnson's immediate reaction was a statement made by quarterback Carson Palmer that indicated Johnson had told Palmer he would be at the team's mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Johnson said that wasn't true.

"I want to make this very clear,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals.''

Johnson made one of his strongest statements in saying he is not planning on reporting to any team functions because he wants to be traded.

"I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible,'' Johnson said. "I don't intend on reporting to anything.''

The Bengals said they have no comment in response to Johnson's statements. A team spokesman pointed to coach Marvin Lewis' statement at the owners meeting that he has fully discussed the Johnson situation and didn't feel it was productive to talk about it again.

Johnson is skipping the team's offseason workouts as he tries to push for a trade. But the Bengals have also made it clear that they have no plans of trading him.

Lewis has said repeatedly that the team has no plans to deal Johnson, despite the wide receiver making the rounds of radio and television talk shows to voice his displeasure about his situation in Cincinnati.

In a February interview with Jim Rome, Johnson said he felt he was being blamed for the Bengals' problems and disappointing showing last season.

"I'm not allowed to say. I get the blame; the so-called best player, I'm the problem," he said. "Someone in-house is spreading this. Maybe they want me to quiet down [and] stop being me. That is not going to happen. I can't function that way. I tried it. It sucked. There was no excitement."

Last month, on ESPN's First Take, Johnson again hinted at wanting a trade.

"I want to continue my career wherever I have the opportunity to win a playoff game and get to the Super Bowl. That's where I want to be," he said.

Wednesday, the Pro Bowl wide receiver said he was surprised by Palmer's comments about his possibly reporting to mandatory camp.

"I wish he would stay out of my business,'' Johnson said.
