Default Bryant Gumbel Leaves NFL Network

Bryant Gumbel is leaving his position as the play-by-play voice of live games on NFL Network, it was announced today. Both parties said it was Gumbel's decision to step aside. Gumbel released the following statement through NFL Network: "I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," said Gumbel. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions. There are a lot of talented people at NFL Network. I thank them, I wish them well, and I have no doubt that they will be very successful going forward." NFL Network President and CEO Steve Bornstein released a statement calling Gumbel "One of the great broadcasters of our time." But he had never worked in play-by-play before he was tapped for NFL Network, and many viewers and critics thought he struggled to learn on the job. NFL Network will begin looking for a replacement to call play-by-play on its eight live regular-season games immediately. Cris Collinsworth is expected to remain as the network's primary color commentator.

Well the NFL Network games just got better. The worst play-by-play announcer is gone. Maybe I could fill in for him; I certainly couldn't be worse.

Cool!

No more masturbating with a cheese grader.

Oh wait... that's what I wanted to do rather than listen to him call the game.

Gumbel never found his big boy voice! Thank god that guy was horrible. Kermit the Frog could have filled in for him and no one would have known the difference.

I normally am not as spiteful of announcers as people around here are (you'd think they were serial rapists) however Gumbel was easily the worst professional announcer I've ever heard. He was often vague and confused about what he was doing. It was embarrassing and he'd keep switching the conversation to interviews about something marginally related when he'd become exhausted with his duties...which usually was after five minutes. This is better for everyone.

I actually don't dislike many announcers. John Madden is nuts sometimes but he entertains me as well. Rich Gannon while new grates me but thats probably because he is a Raider. But I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Gumbel made me want to rip out my eardrums because it was less painful than listening to him.

Whooo-hoooo! Good news, he was awful. Collinsworth is alright as far as color guys go, now they just need to pair him with a good play by play guy.

Doesn't affect me one way or the other...seeing that I only watched one Thursday night game all season. Games on the NFL Network is just a bad idea. Really thinking about it, since they moved the Thursday night games to the NFL Network, I've only seen two of them. Not too hard to figure out which two those were.

I don't dislike many either, they all say some stupid stuff and most can be ignored when it comes to that. But I am thrilled Gumbel is gone, clueless from the gitgo and Madden is an absolute moron that grates. "They need to make a touchdown to win". Great analysis and then it's repeated as if to prove what great analysis it was. A blind person who'd never seen or been to a game could have figured that out.

no real improvement for that network until Marshall "I Hate Denver for no apparent reason" Faulk and Jaime "Brandon Marshall is NOT a 100 catch, 1400 yard, 10 TD playmaker even though he put up extremely close to those stats you overweight slob" Dukes are kicked off the network.
