Default Sharpton: NFL should halt HOF game

CANTON, Ohio (AP) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton's organization plans to ask the NFL to cancel this summer's Hall of Fame game over allegations of police misconduct in the city.

Richard Jones, who heads the local chapter of the National Action Network, founded by Sharpton, said the group is taking action because of police officers' "general aggressiveness and over-the-line attitude to the citizens of Canton, especially the black citizens."

The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins are scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame game Aug. 3 in Canton.

Jones said he has sent information on police misconduct to NFL players Tank Johnson and Adam "Pacman" Jones, who have been punished by the league over their legal troubles.

"Please hold Canton to the same standards you're held to," Jones said he asked the players.

The group also will publish contact information for black NFL stars so they can be urged to put pressure on the league, Jones said.

Adam Herman, spokesman for Mayor William J. Healy II, said the call for the NFL to cancel the game comes as a surprise. Herman said the mayor is committed to meeting with Jones.

"We do not believe the cancellation of the Hall of Fame game is either likely or appropriate in this situation," Herman said Wednesday.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday that the group has not contacted the league.

One arrest the group is concerned about is the Dec. 4 arrest of Cortes Everett, 21, who is accused of carrying a loaded gun and having marijuana.

Everett contends his pants were removed during a search. Safety Service Director Thomas Nesbitt said an internal affairs investigation, which includes video of the arrest, shows Everett's complaints are unfounded.

Two officers were reprimanded for unprofessional conduct during the search, including using foul language, Herman said.

So we should harm all the businesses in Canton that profit from the game and the NFL because two cops used bad judgement?

Hope the NFL tells Sharpton they are considering moving a franchise to Canton if it means people like him won't show up come game day.

So there's video of the arrest which shows the officers being guilty of swearing and nothing else...so Sharpton is attempting to stop the HoF game over the police cursing?

Why won't the media realize he is full of **** and ignore his b.s.

The epitome of racism. Just think of how Sharpton and Rev Jackson have benifited from racism. They don't care about it, they just use it for their own personal gain. Makes me want to throw up

This guy first became famous 20 years ago, when a girl in Upstate NY faked that she was attacked by a few whities. She even stooped to wiping dog **** on herself.

Look up the Tawana Brawley case; it put Sharpton on the map, and the case was a fraud.

Seriously, check this **** out. This guy should have been barred from representing anyone on a national stage after this sham cost Dutchess County MILLIONS of dollars investigating this disgrace.

I could care less about Sharpton, the sooner he dies the sooner a respectable member can take his place and actually achieve some good.

More than the story, I'm still waiting to see a Footsteps or someone like that come in and explain why this makes sense. Where would we be without that crowd...

Does anyone else think people like Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and now that jackass preacher for Obama do more to harm race relations than just about anyone in the last 10-20 years? Seriously, everytime I hear the NAACP taking up a cause I just roll my eyes because we've been so conditioned to the retardom of these people.

I totally agree with this statement. If this is a legit issue cancelling the game is not the way to resolve the issue. I don't think they even expect the NFL to cancel the game. Attaching the NFL to this sheds light on the situation.
