SHANAHAN PLOPS ONTO HOT SEAT
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2008, 11:24 a.m.
The one thing that is now clear in the wake of the sudden dismissal of Broncos G.M. Ted Sundquist is that coach Mike Shanahan has voluntarily assumed a spot on the hot seat in Denver.

That’s the problem with firing a scapegoat. Moving forward, there’s no buffer.

And thus the kevlar and the teflon and even the bubble wrap are gone from Shanahan’s torso; the only thing presently separating him from the reality of NFL accountability is a thin layer of gabardine

I seriously think that if there isn't improvement this year, he's gone and Bowlen will go out to find the best damn coach he can for this team.
Maybe give him like 2 years for some of these young guys to grow, but yeah, he doesn't have much more time IMO.

If we miss the playoffs a third year in a row then he'll be on the hot seat. I don't see Bowlen firing Shanahan. I could see him asking him to cede his GM resposibilities and then Shanahan choosing to resign. Outside of that, I think Shanahan is still safe.

No, he's not. If he was, he'd have been much more aggressive in FA to try to save his job. He knows he's safe, which is why he's taking a passive approach to FA and looking towards the draft knowing full well that any help from the draft will most likely not be seen this year.

keeping or firing Sundquist would not change the power structure at Donk HQ.

No one is ever safe. As much as Shanahan instills that fear in players, if he is thinking he's untouchable, he's in for a rude awakening if the team doesn't improve.

All Bowlen would need to do is review the team results from thje time Elway retired to the present. Status quo for the most part.

Maybe that is why Bowlen is allowing him to consolidate his power. If things don't pan out, there's no one else to blame but Shanahan.

If Shanny is ever fired, which I don't think will ever happen, PFT is going to hold the grandest party of all time. I just hope that in my immediate lifetime (2010) Shanny can win one more ring for no other reason that to see what that tabloid site says.

First thing Bowlen will need to do is hire a GM. Then look for a coach.

I guess we'll be seeing a ton of speculation pieces throughout the offseason. Nobody has any facts but they all want to write something as if they have some inside information.

I don't have any inside information, but if we miss the playoffs AGAIN this year, count me in as the leader of the anti-Shanahan crowd. If I hear another excuse about injuries or coordinators, I'm going to vomit. When is the man with the final say on all matters finally going to get some real, deserved criticism from the fan base?

When Mike Shanahan leaves the Broncos, it will be dark times for this franchise, mark my words.

Cutler will end up like JP Losman when that happens. His growth completely stunted.

I think this is a little bit unrealistic. Yyou are might want to prepare yourself for an 8-8 year. It takes a couple of years to grow a team from within and we are still just startinfg to take that approach. It will pay off though, just might take more time than a lot of the posters here are willing to give...

Well I didn't see a ton of growth this year. As much as we can all agree Cutler has all the tools I wondered myself where we were headed with him as at times he seems uncoached and unprotected.

Oh look! It's the annual "Mike Shanahan is going to lose his job any minute now" thread!

This is a great thread to fly a kite in. Lots and lots of wind in these ones...

my issue here is how much Mike Florio goes after Shanahan...

it's so often that it seems personal to me...

does anyone know if shanny has at any point publicly made derogatory remarks about Mike Florio or PFT.com?

have these guys had a run in of some sort?

what gives?

Some people just don't get it. Shanny IS Bowlen's guy. Bowlen sincerly believe Mike is the best X's and O's there is in the NFL is he is not going to give him up. Like Kaylor said, in another few years if there is not big improvement, Bowlen may bring in a new GM or "draft specialist" but he WILL NOT EVER give up Mike. Take that to the bank.

Yeah, 3 straight years without a playoff berth in a time of re-building is unheard of! This fanbase is spoiled. If we fail to make the playoffs the next 2 years you may have a case. Until then why don't you practice that thing called patients?

Not if Bowlen hires Kubiak when Shanny retires.

The price for trying to pry away kubes would be huge!

If it ends in 2008-09. The best move would be get a young offensive mind to team with Jay during his prime years.

Also getting a solid GM to handle player contracts and the messy work of agents.

Keep the Coach and the GM seperate. It's a conflict of interest to have one man doing both. The Coach can have insight in who he wants. But asking a player to take a paycut in March, then in November when he's hurt asking him to lay his body on the line for the team doesn't float. Also doesn't float when you sit across the table hand him a deal with no intention of paying the bonus money in the contract.

Let the GM and agent be the bad guys. Let the coach be the players coach.

I have a feeling that if Shanny goes Bowlen pays Kubes to come back. Bowlen is fiercly loyal and Kubes was a huge part of the SB's. Kubes also respects Bowlen. Kubes went to Bowlen about taking the CU job after he had been passed over by Houston the first time. Bowlen said its not your time to be a coach you aren't ready and CU won't help you get ready. Kubes listened.

I wouldn't put it past Bowlen going that way if things go south quick.
