Default Could this be a ST Draft?

There's been a lot of talk about whether we'll go predominantly offensive or defensive in the draft. Obviously both areas need work. But after looking at the roster is really appears the greates deficiency is in special teams. As of now we have no legit kicker, no legit punter, and no legit return specialist.

So, there has been talk of DeSean Jackson in the first, he fits that specialist role. So would Leodis McKelvin, another CB but a phenomenal return man.

The 2nd could be a round to pick for an area of need, OT, DT.

4th and on could contain our future Kicker and Punter - Durant Brooks or Drago at Punter and Taylor Melhaff at Kicker.

It scares me to think that we'd have the possibility of having all these rooks at important positions, but it looks lik that's the way we could be going. Thoughts?

The only thing dumber than wasting 9 picks on 4 players in last years draft would be to draft special teams in the 1st round.

I'm all for it.

I don't see a kicker or punter being selected that high and I would hate Jackson at 12. Maybe if we traded down to the back of the first would I not be "that" pissed.

I do hope for a returner somewhere and something has to be done about punter and maybe kicker. I hear they're still negotiating at least with Elam.

Denver needs to sign Elam. Give him a 3 year $9 million contract and be done with it. He is too important. IMO

Jason Elam-K- Broncos Mar. 7 - 9:24 am et

Jason Elam and the Broncos are "a ways away" in contract discussions.
The team hopes to continue talking with him next week, but his agent said he might start making trips to visit other teams. Elam is the Bronco's all-time leading scorer.

Games are won in the trenches,an area we are very weak at.
Specialist type players you draft in the 5th-7th rd,if you draft one at all. 1st round money too much for a player that will only be on the field for 3-5 plays.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I hadn't really thought about the draft in this regard. I think you bring up an interesting point, and if the discussions about trading Foxworth are true, I wouldn't mind getting a first round CB/Return Specialist. I mean, I still think OT and DT are the most important positions that we need to address, but I wouldn't die if we built some CB depth for the future; Bly and Bailey aren't getting any younger.

I think we need to get a Kicker/KOS, but I'm still undecided whether the talent will still be there in the Undrafted Free Agent market or not.

1st round pick for a return specialist has got to be one of the biggest bonehead picks any team has ever made (and Denver has some good ones). Can anyone think of a player EVER being picked in the first for STs purposes?

I agree in principle, but a #12 CB would be an awfully expensive nickel back / kick returner to have on your roster. His contract would be in the range of Cutler's. Your idea makes good sense, but only if we were considering cutting Bly next year. A young CB could learn on the nickel this year, and be ready to start by next year. But, Bly would have to see the writing on the wall...

Miami took Ginn in the top ten last year. It obviously has paid dividends.

We have seven picks. Even if we used three on special teams that's less than half. I don't think this will be a special teams draft.

I have never even heard someone proposeing drafting for special teams.

Really, with a D that can't stop the run (30th ranked run D) we need to focus in the draft or FA and get some run stoppers.

Granted if we got a great kick-off returner, he will get many chances if this D stays the same.

The young players we take will need to be the special teams guys.

So you're saying there's a chance I had just been thinking that I'm not quite sure what positions would be worthwile to pick at number 12. It's ridiculously tough to try and predict what Denver would do. I do believe a trade back is our best option at this point, but I began thinking about one of our biggest weaknesses and special teams looks like the weakest phase at this point. It obviously wouldn't be purely special teams, but I'm thinking several picks will be invested in this phase of the game.

Not to beat a dead horse, our run D was 30th. I would say that it was "weaker" then special teams.

True, but we also have no kicker or punter. I guess you're expecting to score a touchdown and 2pt conversion everytime we have the ball. Also, you're willing to let other teams take over at the 40. Nice

This elam situation really does suck. Just when we thought our ST couldn't get any worse.

I guess this will force Mike to open the playbook up just a little more eh? Pedal to the metal where 4 & 10 is a go and a two point conversion isn't even debated.

If we pick Drago...or brooks before the 7th round...I will be unhappy. Not that they aren't good punters...but what moves a punter up is his ability to kickoff...which neither do. As much as I would love to see drago put on the orange and blue after the draft...I think he's gonna be a 5 to 7 rounder...for someone just grasping for a pick. Anything higher is just plain ludacris.
