Default DeWayne Robertson traded to Bengals

so we let another one slip through our fingers, would have been a nice addition with Thomas up to his old tricks, looks like we are in for another rough season.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3274297

Quote:
The New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms on a trade that would send defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Bengals in exchange for Cincinnati's fourth- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 114 and 151) in the upcoming draft, according to league sources.

Completion of the trade is contingent upon Robertson agreeing to a new contract -- he had two years remaining on his rookie deal with New York -- and passing a physical, though neither is expected to hold up the deal, which could be finalized as early as Monday.

On Friday the Bengals had a deal in place to acquire Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers in exchange for third- and fifth-round picks, but that trade fell through when it did not meet league approval. The Lions then traded Rogers to the Bengals' in-state rivals, the Browns, for a third rounder and cornerback Leigh Bodden.

In Robertson, 26, the Bengals, hoping to improve a defense that has ranked higher than 27th in yards allowed once in the past five seasons, will get a player who isn't as big or as dominant as Rogers has been in his first five season. But Robertson is just as hungry for a fresh start. Robertson, 6-foot-1 and 310 pounds, should be a better fit as a penetrating "3-technique" tackle in Cincinnati's 4-3 scheme than he had been in the Jets' 3-4 the past two years.

In an interesting twist, the Bengals will have on their roster two of the first four picks in the 2003 draft. In fact, Cincinnati selected quarterback Carson Palmer first overall that year from among a group of four finalists that also included Robertson, whom Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis (along with many other personnel evaluators) is said to have loved coming out of the University of Kentucky.

Robertson will be the fifth interior defensive lineman to be dealt for at least one draft pick since Friday, joining Corey Williams (Packers to Browns), Kris Jenkins (Panthers to Jets), Marcus Stroud (Jaguars to Bills) and Rogers. Some do not consider the 2008 draft to be deep at the defensive tackle position, thus several teams have decided to instead spend pick on a veteran.

Why all the hype over a bust pick?

Robertson worth about that. He is only an avg player. Broncos aren't contenders this year we are rebuilding.

We were in the running and the deal fell through, I was afraid of something like this happening. Broncos weren't in a position to trade away two draft picks this year.

Fact is

4th and 5 round picks> Foxworth.

Ya, but rebuilding doesn't have to equate to giving up. Not getting some vet starter at DT is basically giving up on this year.

so there's an obvious theme this year not to spend too much money, any rumors/rumblings to why that is? Bowlen strapped for cash from that ownership lawsuit

Maybe the Broncs just don't think he was that good.

I was in Hoboken this weekend for their St. Patty's day parade and talked to about 50 different drunken Jets fans during, at least 10 of which had season tickets. I know, big deal, but everyone I talked to said that Robertson was nothing special. Most were happy about getting Jenkins so they could bus him out of town and get some draft picks. I just thought it was odd that no one seemed to care that the guy was leaving.

Man, for a 4th and 5th we SHOULD have pulled the trigger.

It's highly unlikely any team is going to get a starting caliber DT in either the 4th or 5th rounds so I really wish we would have gone after it.

Or even Foxworth plus a 7th since we are going to lose him in Free Agency next year anyway!

not trying to be antagonistic, but i think you guys are really over valuing Foxworth, it's pretty obvious teams aren't giving up much to get him, isn't this the 2nd trade involving him that fell through now?

You're right. But we don't even know if the broncs want to give up Foxworth nor do we know if they wanted this guy Robertson all that much.

If it took the Desperate Bengals really "going for it" by offering a couple of second day picks, then odds most of the people in the league aren't too jazzed with this guy.

Hey, at least we have Marcus Thomas!

Who would be jazzed about a top of the draft bust pick that's progressed to become a mediocre starter at a 10 million per year price tag? Aside from this message board, I mean.

Exactly and maybe people aren't interested in Foxworth either since everyone makes it seem like him and any draft pick can get a guy. It's just like Javon Walker when lots of people were saying oh we should've gotten something for him. Obviouslt Shanny would've traded him but nobody bit cause of his injury. Carolina even turned down Walker for Jenkins.

Well, if you know of someway for us to wiggle our way into the top 3 of the draft with only 2 picks in the first 3 rounds, I'd love to hear you spin that yarn.

I would have been asking a different question.

Like why in the hell they were having a St Patrick's Day parade two weeks early.

Good news, stay the course - keep building through the draft. Robertson, Rodgers & Co. were destined to be the next in line of vets Shanny traded for without getting a great ROI.

Haha.. Yeah no kidding. I guess they don't like to be overshadowed by the NYC paradeso they throw it early. Got to tell you though, Its a great town wide party. Hoboken is an awesome town. Basically a drunken bunch of Irishman.

I'm okay with this...

Frankly, I didn't expect for us to contend next season anyway....

no more bandaids...let's be patient and build the team up through the draft and good bargains in FA....

The St. Patrick's Day Parade in NYC would have conflicted with the Hoboken one....also, the Holy Week falls within 7 days of the St. Patricks Day holiday and the town has some rule about not being able to have town-wide functions during the holy week

or something like that...i dont know, it was explained to me but i could barely hold onto my breakfast at the time

Call me an optimist but with teams ahead of us like Buf, Cin and NYJ acquiring DTs, there is a good chance that either Ellis or Dorsey will fall to us.
