Default defensive end Justin Smith 45 mil

Too much? and does this drive the market up more?

The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.

Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43 ½ career sacks but managed only two last season. Smith has played in 16 games every season except his rookie campaign when he made 15 appearances.

Michael Smith covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Man the 49ers are quick becoming the Yankees of football. Last year they paid a FA a huge contract as well.

And yet they'll still have Alex Smith throwing to Isaac Bruce. Fail.

Geese and Smith isn't even a pass rusher.

I think we're better off trading up and drafting Glenn Dorsey

Wait until the CBA is rejected next year. Things will change pretty fast.

Gonna be interesting to see how that plays out. "Physician, cure thy own ills" doesn't work with the owners. They got nailed with a collusion lawsuit not long ago, so that didn't work. The players union isn't amenable to cooperation. I imagine there will be some strife coming up soon, maybe as soon as September, Bowlen alluded to that.

Well they play a 3-4 in SF so his impact does not have to be a pass rusher.
