Panthers close to trading Jenkins to Jets; FB Hoover re-signs
Nearly a year after starting the process, the Carolina Panthers are about to unload disgruntled defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. The Panthers and New York Jets have been in heavy trade discussions about the three-time Pro Bowler and a deal could be completed Friday, according to multiple sources. The Panthers tried to trade Jenkins before last year's draft but pulled back when they couldn't get a first-round pick in return. It's likely they'll willl settle for less (probably a third-round choice) this time to get rid of Jenkins, who, in July, said he didn't like living in Charlotte. He also didn't endear himself to the coaching staff by skipping last year's voluntary workouts to spend time with family in the Washington, D.C. area. Jenkins may not be returning to the Panthers, but the team came to terms with fullback Brad Hoover on a three-year deal. Agent Tim Irwin declined to give financial details. Hoover, 31, has spent the past eight seasons with the Panthers after earning a spot on the roster as an undrafted rookie out of Western Carolina. Hoover played in all 16 games last season and started 12, used mostly as a blocker. The Jets are looking for a bigger defensive tackle to man the middle and it became clear after last season that Dewayne Robertson wasn't who the team wanted in that role. Jenkins, 28, is listed at 6-4 and 335 pounds, but his weight became an issue after he missed much of the 2004 and 2005 seasons with knee and shoulder injuries. He admitted to getting close to 400 pounds while he was sitting out but got his weight under control and played well enough to make the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season. The Panthers are scheduled to pay Jenkins a $1 million roster bonus next week. -- Pat Yasinskas, ESPN.com and The Associated Press |

There are rumors that the Jets are after Jenkins or Shaun Rogers, and it will be a good thing for the Broncos when they finalize a deal for either of them. It will mean that they are definitely going to cut ties with Dwayne Robertson, who I think should be the prime focus of the Broncos off-season work.
Robertson will be expensive, but he is as safe a bet as you'll ever find in a high priced DT on the FA market. High motor and high character are not adjectives often used to describe these guys. Robertson is highly talented and would give the Broncos DL a much needed boost. The Broncos could give up picks in a trade for Robertson, but with the Jets landing Jenkins or Rogers it will almost assure that Robertson will be released and become an unrestricted FA. If he hits the open market the price for his services will be high, but the Broncos should bring him in and offer him a contract that forces him to sign. |

Apparently folks are reporting the price for Jenkins turned out to be a 3rd and a 5th and he moved fast. I think that means the other guys move for less.

Tommy Kelly got $50m. Kris Jenkins, Marcus Stroud, Shaun Rogers, Dwayne Robertson, Corey Williams... They're looking at Star CB money IMO. |

What league are you following? Tommy Kelly just $18M guaranteed. Robertson is going to get a lot more than $11M if he becomes a FA.

For that price, I'm glad we didn't pursue him.

You're totally missing the point. If Robertson is a FA, the team that signs him will be making a payment to him this year in excess of $11M. Ignore how it's spread out over the cap.

It doesn't really matter whatever team he goes to his contract will be redone.

I'd rather overpay a bit on Robertson than give up a first day pick and have to redo his contract anyway.

Robertson is on the books for $9.8m in cash this year which is the 2008 cap hit that would transfer with him. Any team that trades for him does not take on the proration of signing bonus which has him over $11m at present with the Jets.
I think the point is mute anyway cos Shanahan will not dish out for a top DT this offseason. |

The Raiders and Tommy Kelly just set the market price and I dont think Bowlen will advocate any deals like that this season. |
