Bush would have just stood there and smirked, so I guess this is some improvement.

We're not going to play to the lowest common denominator, I'm glad McCain put Cunningham in his place. We should go after Obama on his far left positions and lack of experience/achievement. I have no problem at all with going after Obama, but this "Obama is this muslim bogeyman crap" is beneath us. Don't tell me "what's wrong with saying his name?". I don't see people constantly referring to every other candidate's middle names. Do you see people constantly referring to McCain as John Sidney McCain III? Come on.

I thought that was impressive, at least he didn't commit to the low road.

Then I see him making the Al Queda remarks in response to Obama. THAT is why you won't get elected McCain. When you start talking like Bush you flush away any credibility you may have built.

Of course he would denounce it at this point...it's not gloves off time between McCain and Obama. Now if Hillary was doing that at this point I wouldn't be surprised, her campaign is in desperation mode.

how gullible can you be. This is part of the right wing smear machine, have some jagoff bring up obama's middle name does 2 things:

1.Puts the hussein name out there. Yes there are people out there that are ignorant enough to not vote for someone based on their name.scary huh?

2.Makes Mccain seem like some sort of hero for denouncing this.Anyone with any sort of common sense would denounce this, and yet he scores points.

No not next time, but a candidate can always attempt to discount what their volunteers say and do.

You would think campaigns usually vet individuals before letting them go out on their behalf?

I refuse to believe Mac-Cane's staff is that disorganized.

I'm of the same opinion as Rigs11. They have some surrogate do the dirty work and then Mac-Cane feigns his distain as if he above doing something like this.

How McCain and GOP will go after Obama

Halperin has a good list of the various angles on which McCain will ding Obama that Hillary couldn't or didn't sufficiently. Some of these, of course, will be played up by the canddiate, others by his staff and yet others by shadowy figures.

1. Play the national security card without hesitation.

2. Talk about the Iraq War without apologies or perceived contradiction.

3. Go at Obama unambiguously from the right.

4. Encourage interest groups, bloggers, and right-leaning media to explore Obama’s past.

5. Make an issue of Obama’s acknowledged drug use.

6. Allow some supporters to risk being accused of using the race card when criticizing Obama.

7. Exploit Michelle Obama’s mistakes and address her controversial remarks with unrestricted censure.

8. Play dirty without alienating his party.

9. Dismiss Obama’s brief national tenure from his own lofty platform of decades in the Senate – there will be no ambiguity about who has more experience as conventionally defined.

10. Use his sterling war record to reinforce his image of patriotism and valor – and contrast it with his opponent’s.

11. Emphasize Barack Hussein Obama’s unusual name and exotic background through a Manchurian Candidate prism.

12. Employ third party groups like the NRA to hit Obama on issues that might turn off general election voters. Perhaps an ad such as this will run in Ohio: “So, what do you really know about Barack Obama? Did you know he supports meeting with the head of terrorist states? Do you know he wants to get rid of your right to own a handgun? Do you know he is calling for the repeal of the law preventing gay marriage? Do you know he is for a trillion-dollar tax increase? What do you really know about Barack Obama?”

13. Face an electorate less consumed with “change change change” (the main priority for Democratic voters) and keenly interested in “ready from day one” as an equally important ideal.

14. Link biography (experience/courage) and leadership (straight talk) to a vision animated by detail – accentuating Obama’s relative lack of specificity.

15. Give Obama his first real race against a credible Republican. (Clinton has always asserted that Obama would wilt before a fierce Republican assault.)

16. Confront Obama with a united, focused campaign absent of second-guessing, which hits the same themes and message every day.

While his name is Barack Hussein Obama there was malice intended with that remark. Kudos to McCain for not having it.

Say his name all they want. People should know what his name is and not be afraid of it.

The real question is why shouldn't they say his name? Don't hide from your name. It's not necessary to say his full name all the time because it would be superfluous, but the people that won't vote for the guy because his middle name is Hussein probably wouldn't vote for him anyway. I say it's their problem that they can't deal with it and we should move forward like it's no big deal, because it shouldn't be.

there is also intent . it was clear what Cunningham was intending... trying to link Barak with terrorism , was low , McCain to his credit would have none of it .....
