Default OT: Was the Big Show/Mayweather incident real or fake?

I don't really watch this stuff typically, but my friends do and they're convinced this was not staged...

I admit it looks pretty convincing..

Have any of you heard anything on this?

If you follow the WWE or even if you don't...do you think Maywhether really lost it and broke this guy's nose?

If this really happened...that's hilarious

Looks fake to me. His nose probably would be bleeding a little more.

I've watched some wrestling, and even though its choreographed (mostly for the safety of the wrestlers), a lot of those guys have some serious athletic ability.

It is from the WWE and you have to ask if it is staged

I am ashamed today knowing Bronco fans are this far out of reality.

You do know that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are not real......... Don't you

It was a complete work, made to look real. WWE does a good job at this and has for years. It's done to make you question if it was real or a work, especially the mainstream, non-wrestling fan audience. They did the same thing with Mike Tyson in 1998. The hope they have is that ESPN and the other sports-media outlets of the world will pick it up. They'll then do either a "Boxing Match" with Big Show and Mayweather or some tag-team match involving the two at WrestleMania. It makes sense on the surface as Mayweather has mastered the art of selling and promoting his fights while Vince McMahon is arguably the greatest promoter of our era. I don't doubt it won't get media attention but I think they could have hyped it more with Mayweather starting crap with a babyface (good guy) as mainstream (White America) hates Mayweather and I believe would pay money to see a good guy wrestler "beat up" the cocky boxer.

You would be surprised. Having worked in "the business" in the past, it's interesting how many people can often wonder if something was real or not. Wrestling generally does its best business when these type of situations occur. It wouldn't surprise me at all if more than a few people hear about this from word of mouth, media, message boards - wherever. Possibly tune in to Raw to see what happened = ratings (by the way, Floyd will be on Raw tonight). Taking that a step farther, some people may get interested enough to buy the PPV and for WWE, best of all, some may become new (or renewed) fans.

the punches weren't fake....

dude got his face beat in...that's for sure...

so i guess the question to me is would the Big Show allow real punches to the face?

here's an article i found...

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/spor..._thoughts.html

Quote:
Show, who towered over Mayweather, got down on his knees to mock him, and Mayweather responded by connecting with three punches – which slow-motion replays showed were not pulled – to Show’s face. Show, bleeding profusely from the nose and mouth, became incensed and chased Mayweather, who took off through the crowd with his entourage. Show deserves a lot of credit for agreeing to take those punches from a man who is regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing
The article says the whole thing was clearly scripted...but the punches weren't?

like i said i don't follow the "sport"... but what would you say about a sport that asks you to take real punches to the face without blocking just for the sake of entertainment?

crazy stuff

Yeah they were real you could tell by that stellar camera work that all of a sudden became shaky when he punched. And that swiping smack across the nose sure was powerful.

Again I can't believe this was even asked. But what do I expect, dude is a grown man with a sig about cartoons.

by no means am i a fan...

but outside looking in...i wonder if most of that was scripted but mayweather sort of went overboard...i mean he did clearly punch the guy in the face 3 or 4 times...

i personally have a tough time believing Big Show was all for being punched profusely by arguably the best boxer pound for pound of this era...

if the scripted scene did get out of hand...i seriously doubt it's the first time it's happened...

While it is a work for Mania. Maywhether did connect twice and broke Show's nose.

That's what happens when you put a real fighter in the wrestling ring.

Same thing happen with Tyson about ten years ago. Boxers can't throw fake punches.

You hit the nail on the head. A majority of wrestling maneuvers really hurt (if done properly they don't injure - but hurt). Often times, especially when cameras are close or in the case of a major angle like this one, the wrestlers will work very "stiff" or "tight". In this instance, WWE likely told Mayweather to really lay it in on Show and knowing wrestlers like I do - he was probably all for it. Most wrestlers prefer working stiffer to make the action look more real (think of an actor being slapped). As per the bleeding, watching the replay it didn't look like Show bladed for color (taking a razor and making a small cut on the forehead to cause blood). More likely was that Floyd really tagged him a few times. The wrestling business is a whole different world fellas. It surely isn't for everybody, and I haven't really watched since I left working in the business, but they do have very dedicated fans and they (WWE) know how to absolutely mint money.
