Coach fired after remark about Colorado recruit

Comment about choice of Buffaloes over UT angered Scott's mother

Ten days after star running back Darrell Scott signed with Colorado, the recruiting coordinator of his high school was released from his coaching duties.

Roger Sonsini, also an assistant coach at Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure High School, said he was terminated Friday but refused further comment. Tod Tamberg, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, confirmed Sonsini's release but offered no further comment because it is a personnel issue.

Scott, rated the nation's top high school senior running back by Rivals.com, signed with Colorado following a heated battle with Texas.

Sonsini questioned Scott's decision to pick Colorado over Texas in a story in The News on Feb. 7, the day after national signing day. He told The News, "Colorado came in on Friday [Feb. 1] and said and did something and offered something that Darrell and his mom couldn't pass up."

The comment outraged Scott's mother, Alexis Scott, according to a posting on "The Quad," The New York Times' college sports blog. The mother told The Times she was upset about skepticism regarding her son's decision to attend Colorado.

Alexis Scott and Sonsini met with St. Bonaventure officials last Friday.

"I want to protect my child," Alexis Scott told The Times in her the blog post. "His decision is his decision, and Sonsini and whomever have nothing to do with that."

Sonsini was caught favoring Texas all along ... there have been rumors he was being compensated in some manner to deliver Darrell to the Whorns. The recruiting chat rooms are buzzing with Texas accusations right now, because Darrell Scott is the best back outta California since Reggie Bush.

To be more specific, what Sonsini meant was that a CU booster gave Ms. Scott a 6-figure cushy job with some bank in Boulder in exchange for Darrell signing with CU. But I think the fact that Darrell's mom immediately demanded to meet with the high school officials - and that Sonsini was fired that very same day - speaks volumes about who the good guys and bad guys are here. After all ... if you were REALLY given a cushy job in exchange for your son signing with a college, would you really march right down to the high school offices and have the person who exposed the scheme fired? It doesn't make sense.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Maybe UT expects Sonsini to give back the bribes?

Alfred Williams always talks about his recruiting stories on his show the FAN. He said they flew a helicopter in to his high school for him once. He also said that he verbally committed to like 8 schools because they won't let you leave without an indication and he didn't like to tell people no. He has also mentioned "gifts" and Texas is always included in those.

Sounds like fishy texas recruiting. Funny how a high school coach tried to b**** about CU then gets fired. Me thinks he protests too much. Probably on the Texas payroll.
