Schwarzkopf to endorse McCain
By: Mike Allen Jan 23, 2008 06:37 AM EST Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, the heavily decorated Gulf War commander, will endorse Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday, a Republican source said. McCain is stumping in Florida and Schwarzkopf is in Colorado. But the general is likely to appear on the campaign trail with McCain soon. The surprise announcement comes just six days ahead of the presidential primaries in Florida, which has heavy concentrations of military families and retirees. McCain could become the Republican front-runner if he is able to ward off his two chief opponents, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The endorsement of one military man by another will carry a flood of heavy media coverage in a huge state where it’s tough and expensive for campaigns to reach voters. Schwarzkopf, known as 'Stormin' Norman' for his Persian Gulf heroics and his theatrical (sometimes bombastic) personality, lived in Florida after he retired from the Army in 1991, following Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. His autobiography, “It Doesn’t Take a Hero,” was a bestseller. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0108/8059.html |
