Default 2008 OrangeMane Mock Draft-Introductory Discussion Thread

I know you have all been waiting for this.

I have too. This is about the time we usually set things up.

There are some things I want to talk about first, however. I will be taking on a new position in just a couple of weeks, which will be an extremely hectic time for me for the first few months of transitioning into it, it will definitely cut back on my time here, significantly for that period. I'll still have a window in the evenings (although shorter than usual) and on weekends, but still. I am not sure what I want to do about my own participation in this Draft and also administering it. As of right now, my plan is that I will try the best I can to do both. On the administrative side, I will need your help, to keep the thing moving, since I'll probably only be able to update the Big Board and stuff once a day. I will need people to update the central post that has the Big Board and to update the Catalogue of Trades etc., keep people abiding by the clock etc., helping to notify people when they are on the clock. If anyone wants to volunteer for this, that would be great.....you could start the post with the Big Board and Log of Trades, and you could constantly add to it, just as it was comprised last year and ofcourse when I'm around, I will add to it as well, when I'm home. One person to assist me on this would be great. The same is true for PMing people who are on the clock as the picks change, as I tried to do last year at times, to make sure the thing keeps moving at least at a halfway decent pace to avoid too many situations where everyone has to wait for the whole clock period for every pick. Another person who wants to volunteer for that role would be great too. So basically I need 2 guys who can commit to updating/notifying each day.

The issue of keeping teams: How should we do this? I know some people will want to keep their teams or have certain teams, but I don't see how I can say "X can keep his team, but everyone else has to be in this first come first serve for teams". I would like the thoughts of the community on this. Should it just be like last year, where we have that priority group and we say ok, first come first serve, say you are in if you want to play and name your club and then you guys can change teams later if someone is willing to accomodate you?

Priority List: I plan on the same method as last year. For like 4 days or so, we open it up to the priority list (I will send a mass PM to everyone on there to notify them of the dates when they can come in and claim a spot before it opens up to everyone) before opening it up in general. It will be the exact same list as last year in addition to some people I forgot (through my mistake) to include last year that should have been included (i.e. Crushaholic, Traveler etc....Traveler actually got in later when others withdrew, but I will make sure to include them in the priority list this time from the outset) in addition to a couple other folks who might be newer but have been extremely active in the draft forum the last few months (i.e. lex etc.) and deserve inclusion. I will prepare the priority list in the next few days.

Eddie Mac's proposal: Eddie Mac has a proposal to include the Mock Draft as part of a larger idea, that is making it a Mock offseason for each team, not just hte Mock Draft, but a Mock FA with caps, trades etc. I want him to submit his proposal here to the community to see if you guys want to do that or just a regular mock draft and then we can go from there based on what people want.

Sounds good. I would vote for the regular mock. Including FA w/trades, caps, etc. would take more time than I have.

Any idea when it will be available to those of us who missed the boat last year? I will keep my eyes open but if there was a range of dates that I could keep my eyes peeled, that would be adventageous.

I think everybody who wants to participate should be able to do so.

Use the priority list and the people who have been active in this forum to name general managers for 32 teams. Anybody who is left over who wants to contribute will be assigned to a team as a scouting director. The scouting director can give their general manager input on potential targets and provide advice, but the GM will have the final say.

I am also in favor of the regular mock draft with UDFAs. Free agency with caps is too much of a commitment.

Yeah. There are a lot of good ideas to make it more fun but when we start talking about how to implement it and who will manage the whole thing I suspect the conversation would go quiet very quickly.

I'd love to play again and I don't care which team I get so long as I just get to play.

The idea I had would take a lot of work and with the time difference for me would be quite hectic to manage so we should just stick with the mock draft.

I also agree that if there are more than 32 people interested this year we should double up for teams to give everyone an opportunity to be involved.

And SoCal I'll help you out however I can with this. I can be on here solid from around 1-00pm Eastern to at least 7-00pm each day and can record/update the trades/picks.

The annual mock is always a good time, looking forward to it again SoCal. I'd volunteer my assistance but like you I just started a new position myself that involves some travel. If I find the time available I'd be willing to take on a support/third string role notifying people when they're up.

We planning on carrying over teams again or are we going to pick them anew? I ask because I recently moved to St. Louis so if the Rams are available I'd be happy to give some local representation. ;P

The assistant/scouting director idea sounds great as well. My suggestion would probably be letting all the people who participated through the full draft last year (no late round flaking out) get first dibs on selecting teams, then open the remaining teams up on a first come/first serve basis. Once they're all taken people can post themselves as available assistants that people can then pick up. If someone has a few friends who recently joined then let them partner up as a consortium, and if someone is a power mad Jerry Jones type, well, let them assuage their giant egos.

Likewise for me, but rather in my case its Chicago. Aside from the Broncos, I'm most familiar with the Bears.

After drafting (brilliantly) the last two years, I going to step aside and allow someone else to have a chance this time.

Thats funny, I had the Bears last year. ;P

So if I change teams the Bears will be free for you. Best of luck, they draft like ****. I've had them the past two years and got them a wide array of talented players they could've actually gotten in a real draft but they chose to screw the pooch with regularity.

Since I'm here in ATL, I'd like to make selections for the Falcons, if possible.

Let me guess, you were upset two drafts ago when the completely ignored tight end? Another gem was their massive reach when taking Cedric Benson.

Two years ago was the first season I had them, if I recall I got them Anthony Fasano.

They never draft right, the same needs keep coming back on them.
