Default The Colts have called a 4:30 ET press conference to announce the future of head coach

The on-field leadership of the Indianapolis Colts will be announced today at 4:30 at the team's West 56th Street complex.

At issue is whether Tony Dungy will return for a seventh season as head coach. Expected to be on hand at the press conference are Dungy, team owner Jim Irsay, team president Bill Polian and Jim Caldwell, a top assistant who will replace Dungy when he retires.
Starting this morning, nearly three dozen media members spent several hours in the Colts' press room waiting on the news. Dungy arrived at the complex early this morning but has not been available for comment.
Irsay confirmed on Sunday that he has signed Caldwell to a multi-year contract that will take into account Caldwell replacing Dungy immediately, or after the 2008 season should Dungy walk away then. It's believed Caldwell's contract will pay him approximately $2.5 million annually.

Yup Schefter just stated so.

Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy will return to the helm of the Colts for the 2008 season, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Once again PFT will have to spin their BS about Dungy stepping down (from a few weeks ago) and make it sound like they new it all along and this is just a cover up yadyadyad.

Here's PFT (Florio) lame take.

ONE MORE YEAR FOR DUNGY
Posted by Mike Florio on January 21, 2008, 3:43 p.m.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Colts coach Tony Dungy has decided to stay with the team for one more year, and then to hand the reins over to assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.

So our report from a week ago was right in content, wr-wr-wr-wr-erroneous in timing. We apologize for the error.

Though we suppose we could say that our report was right because our source genuinely thought that Dungy was leaving now, we won’t. Our source was wrong, and thus by trusting that our source was right, we were wrong.

And it doesn’t matter whether the source sat in a steam room with Caldwell as the head-coach-in-waiting confessed that Dungy is leaving now. The report was wrong, and that’s our responsibility, no one else’s.

Back to the decision (i.e., changing the subject), we can’t recall another situation like this at the NFL level, where a head coach consciously took a publicly-known farewell tour/victory lap with his hand-picked successor already on the job and ready to roll.

Meanwhile, we think that Dungy could eventually return to the NFL in a Bill Parcells-type of a position with the Buccaneers or another team in relatively close proximity to Tampa.

Once again Mike Florio is a step above many of us. He's a fan with money and a few lawyer (agent) contacts and made a cheap little site and use's Morgantown TV buddies to host his internet TV show.

Hack.

well they just confirmed it. Tony needs to get the hell out of there so that there will be no barriers in my hatred for the Colts.

Agreed. I like and respect Tony Dungy, but don't want to like and respect the Colts.

An announcement to stay doesn't need a grandstanding event. A simple press release would do the trick. What a joke...

Well let's not forget John had one to anounce he was coming back for one more year.

And Brett Favre will, more than likely, have one.

Yeah, but a QB isn't all that important to a franchise, are they?
