Default Kenny Phillips...

As of right now, The majority of the mock drafts seem to have Phillips at #12. Yeah I know that probably means we won't pick him...

Anyways I'm having trouble finding much on him... So for you Miami fans what can you tell me. He seems to have good measurables and decent production, but what are his relative strength and weaknesses? Does he play to his measurables? Who does he compare to? and most importantly is he worth the 12th pick?

Any info is appreciated

Phillips is a rangy cover safety and is also active vs. the run (even though he needs to gain some weight), racking up a good number of tackles when Miami goes with only 1 high safety and plays him around the box. He had pretty good years in 2005 and 2006 as a true freshman and sophomore. He had a down year this year, as did pretty much the whole defense except for T-Good, Franklin, Moncur and Randy Phillips. He's pretty talented, he can play M-M, zone, he can definitely be a ballhawk. Last year I think he had around 4-5 picks and a bunch of other plays even though he missed a few games. I just expected a little more out of him this year, though, as I think Randy Phillips probably played better than he did at safety in 07.

Here are my scouting notes on Kenny Phillips that I've gathered through the year:
+Very good build and muscle tone
+While playing as the eighth man in the box, he has a great nose for the ball carrier and flows to him
+Good tackling form as a safety
+Seems to understand the mental aspect of the game and as a result is rarely caught out of position
+Very good range as a safety, and has good recovery speed while the ball is in the air
+Very good ball skills
+Could play either free safety or strong safety
+Very disciplined, and does not bite on play action
+Comes from a program that has produced very good safeties

im a big Canes fan... I love this kid and I have wanted him for a long time! Can play FS/SS and has even played CB a few times. I think he runs in the high 3.9s or low 4.0s. He hits hard and can cover. Someone said he is a mix of Laundry (hitting/run) and Taylor/Reed (cover/ball hawk).

Wow, 3.9 eh? We should draft him just so we can watch him run 40s.

I want Phillips. At 12, I think he will be the only major impact player who won't have a comparable alternative in round 2...ie we could take Conner or Otah, but there should be some LBs and OTs available in round 2. There are no other safeties who could hold Phillips' jock.
