Even though I knew his chances of returning were less than 10%, I didn't see THIS coming for him. A little part of me just died inside....

Good luck Rod. We'll miss you on the field. Hope you stay in town to help the Broncs with the blood drive, if nothing else.

Rod Smith # 80

Was a football player and a class act. He should be the bench mark that any rookie, coming into the league, should follow.

I missed #80 this year. A true leader.

the question, more so than the Ring of Fame, is what will happen to the #80.

Arguably, Rod has been the most important/legendary player since #7 hung it up for the Broncos.

I for one believe there should never be another #80 for the Denver Broncos, but ultimately I doubt it will happen.

If I'm remembering right that was the first catch of his career. I hope he stays in the Broncos organization.

OH POO....

I remember watching that game sitting in a room of Redskins fans (I did go to college in VA) and getting a big smile and my face as I told my fraternity brothers "F YOU" and walked out the room.....classic.

Everyone had to have this feeling all season long. I would love for Rod to stay as a position coach, much like Steve Watson did - and help continue to mentor Marshall and anyone else on this team. A lot of people tend to underestimate the influence a position coach can have on the development of a player. Marshall has had the blessing of learning from Cris Carter and Rod Smith, two all-time greats at the position.

Rod Smith will always be remembered as the greatest wide receiver the Broncos ever had on their roster, and perhaps it'd be fitting that the one he mentored in Brandon Marshall - would overtake him someday.

A Ring of Famer, and by all means should be considered for the Hall of Fame. A guy who was willing to do whatever it took for his team to win, and was a real winner in the Denver community. The NFL needs more players like Rod, and this world needs more people like him. May the best happen to him and his family, for whatever route he chooses if this is indeed the end.

Thank you Rod, and if it was up to me, #80 can be retired forever.

no surprise here, only sadness. By far one of my favorite all time Bronco players. I hope he enjoyed playing as much as we all did watching him. I'd lay down in a puddle and let Rod Smith walk on my back over it. Well maybe not but you get my drift.

What a great career and class act this guy has brought to this organization. He played with every ounce he had and through all the injuries could bear with his soul. That is probably why his hip is in such bad condition.

Man...would I love to draft another Rod Smith. You will be remembered, and a definite HOF guy.

This opens up another roster spot for us...and hopefully Rod can be an addition to our coaching staff. Someone with some real knowledge and sense of leadership.

well seeing how this hip thing is all Mike Shanahans fault , perhaps we could fire Shanny , bring in Jerry Glanville and hire Rod Smith to be special teams coach .........
