Default What were the comments on Cutler's release time?

I missed the segment on this... how fast is his release and how does it compare with the greats?

They timed his release with Elway's and Elway apparently has a .7 of a millisecond on Cutler. They also said Cutler needs to work on this, though why they are worried about this I have no idea. It's not like his passes are getting hit out of his hands during throws. Cutler's release is the least of my worries. It's not even slow by NFL standards.

Do you have the exact time?

Wait .7 MILLISECOND? Or .7 second? Say Elways release was 1.0 second(s)...Jay's would be 1.7 seconds?

Will Demps could have had a nice night on Cutler! 2 dropped INTs.

No I believe it was 3 milliseconds for Elway and 3.7 for Cutler. It was kind of a dumb segment. It's like they were looking for things for Cutler to work on and that's what they decided "he needs to work on." I thought it was lame.

Now Phillip Rivers, you know the one with the vaunted "quick release", well if he as to throw it further than fifteen yards he has to wind up like he's tossing a javelin. That has to be the longest release in the NFL next to Byron Leftwich's.

I believe they said the difference was .30 seconds (Elway) vs. .37 seconds (Cutler).

Although they should measure Elway's release time from that little hand pat he always gave the ball right before he let it rip...

Aaron Brooks had a long release too...his was pretty bad. Yeah Rivers wind up is pretty pitiful for an NFL QB.

I remember the segmant last year or the year before...Bulger has the quickest in the NFL...Marino had the quickest ever though.

That's a good point on the ball slap. And thanks for the correction on the time.

Anyway the point is that unless you're molasses slow, ball release isn't important so long as your decision making speed is ok. If you know what your doing and have a that internal clock working, the actual speed that your arm moves isn't a huge deal. Peyton Manning likes to keep his really short to limit defenders' reaction time, but overall it's not a big deal. Look how much that pump hurt Elway's career!

Exactly..it's not a big deal. If you can make your decisions quicker and TIME things correctly, it will help you overcome any deficiency of arm speed, which Cutler really doesn't have.

However, the velocity of his throws are worth that extra time he needs to take...even though that time isn't even bad by any means.

Release time is a big deal. Cutler has a horrible windup, plus a low release point. Generally, QB's with a windup like that go the way of Aaron Brooks.

They had one of those guys calling the game on 950 TheFan... according to him all the great ones were between .30 and .40 so my guess is he will be alright.

There's times I've seen Cutler throw without the windup. But that is his basic throwing motion. He needs to work on that as well as his footwork.
