Default N. Chomsky, D. Tutu speak about Israeli Apartheid

The occasion was Bush's Mideast "Peace Conference" in Annapolis, Maryland, which happened this week -- an event that was doomed before it ever started. This is why I qualify it with quotes.

Democracy Now! covered a parallel peace gathering sponsored by a Palestinian Christian group.

Noam Chomsky spoke on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an issue on which he is pre eminent.

The keynote, however, was by Desmond Tutu, who delivered an emotionally stirring appeal for justice -- and called an end to Israel's brutal version of Apartheid. Tutu brings the Old Testament to life and describes the parallels between the ancient Hebrews and present day Palestinians.

You will never hear anything like this - in the US corporate media. Thank heaven for the internet! Be sure to listen to the very end.

Not to mention that if Israel did what people want them to they wouldn't have a country.

Fallacy: Poisoning the Well

Description of Poisoning the Well

This sort of "reasoning" involves trying to discredit what a person might later claim by presenting unfavorable information (be it true or false) about the person. This "argument" has the following form:

1. Unfavorable information (be it true or false) about person A is presented.
2. Therefore any claims person A makes will be false.

This sort of "reasoning" is obviously fallacious. The person making such an attack is hoping that the unfavorable information will bias listeners against the person in question and hence that they will reject any claims he might make. However, merely presenting unfavorable information about a person (even if it is true) hardly counts as evidence against the claims he/she might make. This is especially clear when Poisoning the Well is looked at as a form of ad Homimem in which the attack is made prior to the person even making the claim or claims. The following example clearly shows that this sort of "reasoning" is quite poor.

Before Class:
Bill: "Boy, that professor is a real jerk. I think he is some sort of eurocentric fascist."
Jill: "Yeah."

During Class:
Prof. Jones: "...and so we see that there was never any 'Golden Age of Matriarchy' in 1895 in America."

After Class:
Bill: "See what I mean?"
Jill: "Yeah. There must have been a Golden Age of Matriarchy, since that jerk said there wasn't."

Examples of Poisoning the Well

1. "Don't listen to him, he's a scoundrel."

2. "Before turning the floor over to my opponent, I ask you to remember that those who oppose my plans do not have the best wishes of the university at heart."

3. You are told, prior to meeting him, that your friend's boyfriend is a decadent wastrel. When you meet him, everything you hear him say is tainted.

God, you're such a drama queen. Annapolis was a first step to try to restart communication between the two sides. Secretary Rice will begin a modern version of "Shuttle Diplomacy" pretty soon as the hard core negotiations are about to get underway. I believe the first meetings will be on December 12th. From what I have read, the Israeli FM is very positive about this conference and upcoming meetings that have been scheduled as a result, in addition, I also think it is helpful that we tried to be inclusive about this conference and included Syria, and I think they appreciated that.

So cal these people hope for nothing to come of these talks. They don't want things to go well because they are blinded by there hatred of Bush. Maybe it's because of the Repubs attacks on Clinton over Lewenski and this is the payback.

Yep - all criticism of Bush's policies can be reduced to "blind hatred."

That's the ticket.

That way you don't have to think (or actually argue over the validity of the criticisms.)

Almost - it's your blind hatred of Bush that you believe qualifies as reasonable criticism.

I could see how you feel that way because it's all that you do. And you've been doing it for 8 years now. I've watched you do it.

For eight years now your mantra has been "don't criticize Bush" - like Bush is some sort of monarch and America is medieval England.

You have no understanding or appreciation of the principles or the freedoms for which out founders fought and died.
