Default Jobless Claims Jump Sharply

Jobless Claims Jump Sharply

Number of People Seeking Unemployment Benefits Rises Sharply

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of new people signing up for jobless benefits last week jumped sharply, suggesting that the labor market is softening as national economic activity slows.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that new applications filed for unemployment insurance rose by a seasonally adjusted 23,000 to 352,000. It was the highest level since Feb. 10.

The report surprised economists. They were forecasting claims to hold steady around 330,000.

The economy, which grew at a brisk 4.9 percent pace in the summer, is expected to slow to a pace of just 1.5 percent or less in the current October-to-December period as housing and credit troubles take their toll on consumers and businesses alike.

The handouts have already been snapped up by ExxonMobil, Halliburton, KBR, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Raytheon, G.E., and DynCorp.

Get in line (and tell your kids and their kids to do the same) to pay for them now, taxpayers.

(But Hotrod can personally vouch for the fact that every last one of these individuals is a slacker who doesn't want to work, right?)

With the entire Housing sector in shambles... I've been wondering when this number was going to start increasing. The mortgage industry s a fracion of what it used to be, real estate agents have been hurting all year and now new construction has dropped significantly... Considering those 3 groups account for a significant percentage of U.S. employment The unemployment #'s could look really bad in the near future.

Ooooh, jobless claims were 6% above what was expected.

100*((352000-333000)/330000) = about 6.6%.

Obviously, the US is teetering on the brink of total collapse and destruction!

It's a shame he started waxing his unibrow. I think the unibrow look gave him a certain simian charm.

His response doesnt make sense to me either -- the fact is most of us do expect unemployment rates to go up -- and I am not planning to play the blame game. As inflation creeps up, and as there is less money to spend and more concern about teh economy people will likely spend less as they do (our enconomy which is built on consumption (70%) will take a big hit.

At this point the spending domino still seems strong (I dont see how it will remain so) unless we see a very steep decline in oil prices -- or some other bit of unexpected good news.

True at this point -- we do have very low unemployment numbers -- but dont you see those numbers going up over the next year?

I see them going thru the roof once the entightlement party takes control. They will raise taxes and increase goverment freebes. Force people to lay off workers and give said workers a free ride.

Didn't we see a large overhaul of federal welfare the last time a Democrat was in power?

The freebies have already been handed out to Halliburton and Bush's oil and defense industry benefactors.

And the tax increase has already been meted out in the form of your personal tab (and that of your kids and their kids) for Bush's Iraq misadventure.

Republican tripe at it's best.

Of course they never mention the economy almost always improves when Democrats are in the WH.

Not to mention that Bill Clinton signed legislation that puts a time limit
on how long someone can be on welfare. And surprise, when their
welfare benefits ran out, they had to get a job, and most of them did.
Where was there hero Reagan at on that? A major part of Reagan's
campaign was running against the "welfare queens". Why did it take
until Bill Clinton came into office to get them off the welfare rolls?
Think about that the next time some right winger claims the Dems
are the party of entitlements.

I'm not. Some of it IS my own doing though. Other parts of it are just "that's how it shook out".

But you only get to live once, so sometimes doing crazy things are expected (at least for me!)
