Default Hoge on Young vs. Cutler

• Vince Young or Jay Cutler? The more I study them, the more evidence I see that Young will always be a threat to run and make a play once in a while, but he will never be the consistent guy you will need from the pocket. One thing that confirms this for me is his footwork. Footwork for a quarterback, and for that matter all players, is the key to success. As I study Young, I noticed that he is very sloppy in that area, I believe there are two reasons for that. The first is bad habits and the second is that his footwork is a reflection of his eyes. Because he is limited in reading and understanding coverages, he panics and therefore, his footwork gets sloppy. I do feel he made some of his best throws last week, but they came against prevent looks. When the Jags blitzed, he was lost! Does he still need time? Yes, but the Titans could be an elite team if they had better quarterback play.

Now when you put Cutler under the microscope, one thing is clear: while neither signal-caller has a big-time wide receiver, having a stud wideout doesn't affect your physical ability to make certain throws and you still must be able to read coverages. Cutler has amazing skills when it comes to throwing the ball. He has great anticipation when he throws and has a great grasp of coverages, although at times he gets caught making a mistake by misreading something or trusting his arm too much. He has massive upside, and if he had a defense like Young's and a more consistent running game, the Broncos would be a playoff team. If the Titans had drafted Cutler, they would be a powerhouse!

NICE!!!!

I remember days before the draft talking to some fellow Bronco fans saying that Cutler might drop to us... Everyone kept saying I was nuts that he was basically a Tennessee product and they were going to draft him. Not only am I glad that Tennessee did what they did, but thank God the Cardinals grabbed leinart.

Good for Us!

"Because he is limited in reading and understanding coverages, he panics and therefore, his footwork gets sloppy."

Does this remind anyone else of a former Bronco QB now famous handball player

Yea because Hoge is really unbiased. I love my Broncos and have great respect for Young. I love how last year they won because of Travis Henry running the ball so well. This year it is because the D is playing so well. I guess it will always be something. That said I hope we can make young look silly tonight

I dunno, but didn't we really all know this during the draft? I always felt Young was a distant 3rd to Leinhart and Cutler. He's a great athlete, but imo, will never be a great QB at the NFL level.

Agree 100%.

Funny, though, I really thought Leinhart was going to be the best QB of the three. Glad it worked out the way it did.

Put me in the camp of thinking that Cutler was a media hype product and overrated coming out of Vandy... You can also put me in the camp of having already ate my crow on that one!

I am with you I thought he would be a Kyle boller strong arm but really over-hyped. I like what I see so far but I am not ready to crown him. He still has about 1 dumb (game breaking) play per day.

I was lucky enough to find about 10 Vandy games online (prior to the draft)... After watching those it was real tough to be anything but impressed.

...also rated the teams on advantages by position. They gave Denver the nod at QB, WR, Special Teams and DBs.

Tennessee got the thumbs up with RB, OL, DL, LB's and...COACH!

I think Fisher is an outstanding coach but I was surprised to see Shanny not get the coach nod. It probably takes into account overall staff and coaching. Still, it was a little shocking for some reason. Maybe I'm too much of a Shanny homer.

Anyone else feel like because there is all this pre-game talk toward the negative about VY that he'll go ahead and have a MONSTER game against the blue and orange tonight.

Just wonderin', cuz I'm afraid that's what's going to happen.

Not unless he suddenly learns how to read defenses.

We need to use Cecil more out of the backfield! Oh, Jay..?...He's good now and only going to get better. The mistakes will go down when we get more than Sheff and Marshall.

I was surprised after reading Hoge's positive comments. I always thought he was a Bronco hater. With an open mind it's difficult to overlook Cutler's abilities.

We should wait until he wins as much as Young is to anoint cutler the winner. Beating Titans would go a long ways towards that.

another mobile QB. We never shut these guys down. I would predict a game like the Jax game. Just hoping we stop one more 3rd down conversion from the scrambling QB and win.
