Default Broncos ready to ride Ramsey if Cutler out

Broncos ready to ride Ramsey if Cutler out

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_7371640

By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News

DETROIT — Through all the bad news, and there's plenty of it for the Broncos at 3-5 and reeling, one issue that won't complicate matters is Patrick Ramsey stylistically is close to the quarterback he backs up.

Like Jay Cutler, Ramsey is a strong-armed, pocket-oriented passer with some movement skills. So if he has to play long term, with Cutler nursing a left leg injury, the offense won't have to be completely adjusted.

"He's a tough guy. He's got a good arm. He's a veteran who's been around," Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley said. "It's good to have that luxury, to have that guy able to come in when your quarterback goes out."

The transition was difficult five years ago when the mobile Jake Plummer was replaced by Steve Beuerlein and Danny Kanell.

It hurt the movement game that has been synonymous with Broncos quarterbacks in recent seasons and forced Denver into a pocket-based offense.

"I have a lot of confidence in him," Broncos left tackle Matt Lepsis said.

"He's played in a lot of games in other places. It's not like a rookie quarterback getting thrown into the fire. He's been there and done it. So I don't think anybody is worried; at least I wasn't when he came in."

Ramsey's first snap Sunday took place in a third-and-16 situation. He calmly zipped the ball over the middle to Stokley for 18 yards and a first down. But turnovers hurt.

Corey Smith's sack and strip of Ramsey near the Broncos goal line early in the third quarter paved the way to the eventual 44-7 loss. Shaun Rogers intercepted a middle screen with Ramsey under duress during the fourth quarter and rambled 66 yards for a 37-point advantage.

Ramsey completed 29-of-46 passes for 262 yards, one touchdown and one interception. There were several drops by receivers, and he consistently was pressured, given he was in obvious pass-only mode.

"I can't say I necessarily got in a rhythm, but I felt a little better than I thought I would," Ramsey said, adding he should have thrown the interception into the ground. "The second half I settled down a little."

The Broncos signed Ramsey as a free agent March 19. A first-round pick in the 2002 draft, he was making his first regular- season appearance since throwing an incompletion Nov. 26 for the New York Jets. His last extensive action was in the 2005 season finale, when he attempted 25 passes for the Washington Redskins.

In 34 career appearances before Sunday, Ramsey had completed 480-of-862 passes (55.7 percent) for 5,649 yards, 34 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

"Playing quarterback is a difficult position but that's my job, to be ready in case something happens with Jay," Ramsey said.

"I take pride in that, being prepared mentally to play in the game."

He was 29 of 46 ... with 5 drops!

That is incredible coming off the bench on the road, when the defense knows you're throwing on every down. Sure, the fumble on the goalline was awful, and he does look like a deer in the headlights when the pocket collapses, but the Rogers INT was not his fault - Rogers was moving laterally, and because it was a screen, Ramsey had several guys in his face.

The guy has a wicked arm. I'll take 29 of 46 with 5 drops on the road in a blowout. Guys catch the balls, and he's 34 of 46, which would be amazing in that setting.

Best backup QB we've had since Frerotte, and before that, Kubiak.

Chill out, Ramsey-bashers.

True, if Cutlers gone we really are playing for McFadden or some guy with Peterbilt stamped on his chest.

I know people around here have a "thing" for Cutler, but I saw Ramsey have the ability throw down the field. It was his first game in a while and it showed. Next week, the veteran might actually be able to handle the Arrowhead environment...

I am always optomistic. I love watching cutler, but for now we don't have that luxury and who knows how long it will be. So with that said, it is time to get behind ramsey and see what this guy can do. It's not like we have loved every QB Denver has had, but as true Bronco fans we cheer for the team on the field that day.

Damn I know this season is bad when I start sounding like a teenage cheerleader with a crush!!

I thought Ramsey was tremendous for the situation. No reps, tough road game, losing situation. Even when all his passes were getting dropped, he didn't freak out. He was a good leader and did his best - great backup.

The thing that really pissed me off is that they let Ramsey have a more open passing game than Cutler. I know we were playing from behind and it was a screwed up game, but why not let Cutler start slinging it from the beginning, then open up the run game? It seemed from the beginning that they let Ramsey air it out, when they didn't give Cutler the same plays. It really left me scratching my head...

It's Ramsey's 6th or 7th year....With a backup in, you change the dynamics a little.

I missed the game, but is there a chance that Ramsey was simply looking to air it further, while Cutler has been trying to reel it in and play smart.

I agree with hargrove, I thought considering the circumstances, Ramsey played pretty well.

I've always liked Ramsey, he was a warrior in washington, and then got screwed by Gibbs. I'm upset that Cutler might miss games and hence miss experience, but I won't find it dificult to root for Patrick.

So , we keep hearing rumors the JCut is done for the year!

Pretty much everyone agrees that Shanahan is bad at evaluating talent.

Ramsey did fairly well yesterday, considering he came in cold.

What if he is able to spark this team somehow? He DOES have more experience than JCut. Maybe this isn't all bad.

NO ONE Thought that Brady could come in and replace Bledsoe in 2001, and do what he did then and since.

Wouldn't it be great if somehow this turned things around?

Iknow, I know...if pigs could fly!

Can you imagine letting Cutler throw for 46 times in a game? Jay would get 400 yards!

Did you ever think to wonder why Ramsey is not a starter? It is because he is spastic! He plays one good game and then one bad game. If this guy can't beat out Chad in NY with his water pistol arm what makes you think he is all that great?? Franchise QB's don't move around that much.

Don't bank on Ramsey!
