Default Positives: Special teams looks like a real special teams unit

Thank you Andre Hall for making our special teams not suck. And thank you Scott O'Brien for slowly beginning to fix the worst unit and the league. They've been getting better and better every week. They are starting to look respectable.

That's something I've noticed over the last few games that I've been able to watch (thankfully they didn't have the game in my area today). But last week I commented on how improved our ST looked against Green Bay.

Yeah we have gotten better. I just want to see a returner who has "it."

It's rare to find in the NFL, but Andre Hall has done an exceptional job.

Thanks for starting positive thread. I am highly demoralized with the loss and need some postives to look forward to. You are right about ths - As per DVOA ranking of football outsiders we got up to lows 20s from 32 in special team rankings. Infact we were also showing some steady improvement on offense till Myers & co took a couple steps back.

We missed a FG, had a couple of O.K. returns and a couple of bad ones.

Did I miss a blocked punt or a return for a TD?

We didn't totally blow. Maybe that qualifies as "bright spot" for us these days.

Kickoff returns were indeed a lot better.

I always wondered this, is returns a coaching thing, or a special player type thing? I mean, guys like Dante Hall, Devin Hester... You just have to find them, don't you? I mean, you coach blocking schemes and whatnot, but ultimately, it's on the guy with the ball, right?

If sucking less is getting better, then we're getting better. I'll take any good news I can get.

Coverage and returns have improved. Just because we havent hit a homerun on a return or blocked a kick does not mean that they havent improved. That, my angry little friend, is the bright spot. Improvement somewhere.

Game breaking return men are pure talent. You can't coach it. However a lot of special teams is nothing but equal parts desire and discipline. If you have those two things the rest will fall into place with any half decent coordinator.

I guess it was nice not to suck. We did have one return out to the 40.

You're correct, not sucking is better than sucking.

This thread is depressing. This is the only positive we can take from the game, that our special teams unit sucked less?

Wow.

Wake me up when the draft starts.

Dude, you'd better clean that attitude and jump aboard the "Our STs don't suck as much" train before you get left at the station.

29 yard return ave is an huge improvement over what it has been all season. The fact it we have finally found a returner and it isn't Martinez.

Hmmm, I guess another positive and getting your ass handed to you is that you get a lot of practice returning kicks...

I guess they were ok in the 1st half, CBS cut to SD Minn game so I didn't see much of rest of game.

I thought the only respectable person out there was Greek, He was there to tend Travis Henry's ouchies all day.

TITANS UPDATE***

If we win this game we can credit Scott O'Brien. Say what you will about this team, but O'Brien was give garbage to work with at the beginning of the season and slowly he's righted this ship from less sucky, to respectable to scoring our first special teams touchdown since the Roosevelt administration. I love that man!

It would be nice if they extended his contract, before it gets too expensive.

Kaylore, despite the flub, the ST did look even better. They have gone from improving to avg, to pretty good in the last 3 games. Even the D is beginning to show signs of improvement.

Yah, the ST's have been overlooked somewhat in the better all-around play. ST's are a huge deal in the NFL. It's a three-phase game, four if you count the coaching staff. You need at least two phases playing solid football to make the playoffs. Denver I think has that now - the ST's and the O. The D is at least contributing TO's, and that's a big dang deal also. Denver is just about even on TO ratio right now I think, maybe -1. They were at -8 two games ago.

So the ST's contributing with field position and a TD, and the D getting TO's has helped enormously the one phase that was solid for the first 6 games, the O.

Denver is getting close to the solid three-phase game that makes Titles.
