Default Raider fans get shot by Gang

OAKLAND — Four football fans tailgating Saturday night outside a Oakland Coliseum parking lot in preparation for Sunday's sold-out Raiders game were shot by suspected gang members who mistook them for rivals, police said.

All the victims, including two brothers, were taken to local hospitals and are expected to recover, police said. Police said at least a dozen rounds were fired at the victims, who were all hit with bullets several times.

In an unrelated incident Sunday, a man was shot in the upper thigh or groin area after the Raiders game, police said. A fight sparked the shooting, which happened in the 66th Avenue parking lot about

4:30 p.m., police said.

After a brief foot chase, an Alameda County sheriff's lieutenant detained the shooter and recovered the gun, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson. Nelson said there is no indication that the gun was ever inside the football game.

The victims in Saturday night's shooting — whose names were not released — include two brothers, 23 and 17, both from Oakland, a 24-year-old Alamo man and a 23-year-old San Leandro man, police said.

The shooting happened at 10:25 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Hegenberger Road near Baldwin Street. That area is a back entrance into Coliseum parking lots, and Oakland Raiders fans are known to park vehicles there and party in the days leading up to a home game.

The Raiders played the Kansas CityChiefs on Sunday.

Officer Jason

Andersen said the four victims are not thought to be gang members. They were part of a larger group involved in a tailgate party, he said.

"We were just kicking back," the 23-year-old Oakland man told police. "We always hang out (here) for Raiders games."

Police said there may have been an event going on at a nearby event hall that attracted members of an Oakland street gang. There was no answer at the hall Sunday.

Witnesses told police that several vehicles drove into the area where the shooting took place and stopped. Several men got out of one of the vehicles, yelled out a "gang name," and at least one man, and possibly others, began shooting at the tailgaters, Andersen said.

The suspects then fled in the vehicles, and witnesses did not get a description of the shooter or shooters or the vehicle.

Police said those shot had non-life threatening injuries. The Alamo man was driven by friends to an Oakland hospital; ambulances took the other three victims to another local hospital.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to

$20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information should call police 238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 238-6946.

Tailgating outside the parking lot the night before the game? Nothing good can happen when you do something like that.....especially in Oakland.

I can't even imagine the police in that city let people do that. I know they wouldn't around most stadiums.

Either way...citizens should be able to walk the streets without getting shot.

Dave,

California is totally different than Denver. This happens here everyday. Schools in LA have banned the wearing of Raider jerseys for a reason, which is the believed association of the raider colors with gang activity and the thug mentality. Is it right what happened no, but it comes as common place for those that live on the left coast.

Boss, I was born and raised in Orange County, went to HS in Santa Ana, and college in Fullerton. Trust me i'm very familiar with California and it's gang problems.

I'm just suprised at the reactions. No one deserves to be shot by some roaming group of cowards regardless of how you are dressed.

I recall after the "Columbine Shootings" a particular raider fan (CBF knows hill well) tought it was funny to make jokes about the incident.
the majority of RaiderFans are trash (there are a few exceptions)!

I'll be a bigger man and not make fun of raiderfan who got shot trying to tailgate a day early, at night, in Oakland, although it's probably as safe as throwing a Barmitzvah in the middle of Tehran during rush hour!

A guy was ****ing shot, and you guys are saying things like this? Sickening.

Before they're Raiders fans, and before we are Broncos fans, we are all Football fans. To me, any Football fan of any colour, is one of my own.

Besides, the guy was shot. He's a Raiders fan, not a fascist genocide-commiting dictator. I'm pretty disgusted, joke or no joke. My heart goes out to them.

Walking the streets without getting shot is one thing.....drinking in public overnight in a bad section of town, where anyone with any common sense would look to avoid, is another thing entirely.

It reminds me of the parents you typically see interviewed after their child gets involved in a drive by shooting late at night. "My little 8 year old would never hurt anyone. He was just minding his own business at the playground" Yet what they aren't telling you is that they were at the playground in the middle of the worst section of town at 2AM.....working for the local dealers.

I've taken enough classes in victimology to identify situations where it is clearly wrong to "blame the victim." I just don't have any sympathy for people that seem to go out of their way to put themselves in harm's way.

Will I joke about it? No way. But will I go out of my way to feel sorry for their plight? Not under these circumstances.

Saying what?

There are certain things which are not particularly safe:

Walking through Harlem at night flaunting a Rolex and gold chains.
Running with the bulls in Pamplona
Wading in the water off Nags head during a Bluefish Blitzand
And Tailgating at the mausoleum

I feel for the guys, but come on, you can't fix stupid!

Once again Dimitri describes LA and forgets places like Orange County dont have this type of crime. Sure, we have gangs but LA is a piece of crap (not all cities by far) compared to OC for bringing up a family. I know you want to high tail it out of LA (San Fernando Valley) to Colorado. I would to if I had to live there. Come south a little ways and enjoy what SoCal should be. Go farther south and become a bandwagon Chargers fan. Just get a flag or big sticker for your SUV.

ABout the shooting, i spotted this gem of a quote, "That area is a back entrance into Coliseum parking lots, and Oakland Raiders fans are known to park vehicles there and party in the days leading up to a home game."
Days leading up to a game? That isnt tailgatting, that is camping or homeless out of your car. You want these pepps drinking for a few days until game time ? Here is where some of the faider fans mentality takes place yet the Faiders see no problem in this behavior.
