Jared Allen's Marching Mullets
Yes, it's real. Laugh at us.
Kansas City Chiefs DE Jared Allen spends his Sundays digging in and driving opposing offenses backwards to prevent them from getting a first down. However, Jared’s goal becomes quite the opposite when he joins arms with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). His passion to aid in finding a cure for juvenile diabetes didn’t emerge from having a close relative or friend with the disease. It merely came from opening a letter and then his heart to the notion that some people have dreams that will be hard to achieve without the help of others.
Jared happened to come across a letter about a young boy who had his whole life in front of him full of dreams, hopes, and wishes. As he read on he realized the day-to-day struggles this child had to endure just to survive. So with his 6'6" frame, #69 decided to do whatever he could to lift the weight of the world of this boy’s shoulders.
As time when on and his love, drive, and passion to help every child he possibly could grew, he became very attached to JDRF and each special youngster involved. The deeper Jared got, the more real their struggles became to him. He witnessed each day the effort it took just to eat, what they were allowed to eat, and if they weren’t sure they had to prick their finger just to find out if they could. Seeing this never-say-die attitude of the children only drove this California native to figure out a way to give back even more.
JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place at 200 different sites nation wide and hosts over 500,000 walkers a year. The walks are family-friendly, held at great locations, and feature plenty of entertainment, food, and fun. Needless to say, Jared knew that this would be a great opportunity to turn the efforts of one into that of many.
This is where the Chiefs faith comes in. Jared has formed a team - Jared Allen’s Marching Mullets - to participate in this year’s walk at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, October 13th. However, he feels that no team can be too big or give too much. This is why he is opening the Marching Mullets team to anyone with the spirit to help. He is inviting anyone who wants to aid in this effort to either join the team and participate that day or simply donate to the Marching Mullets as they walk for a special cause.
You can join in # 69’s efforts in eight easy steps. Step 1 sign on to walk.jdfr.org, step 2 find the ‘support a walker’ box, step 3 type in ‘Jared Allen’, step 4 click your enter button, step 5 click on Jared’s name, step 6 select ‘donate to this walker’ or ‘join this team’ if you’d like to walk, step 7 fill out the information and submit, step 8… Make a difference.
If you think your mullet has what it takes to stand side-by-side with Jared and his band of fellow “Marching Mullets,” you can log on to, http://www.youtube.com/JAMarchingMullets. There you will find a special video and a letter that Jared has personally wrote inviting any and every person who wants to join him on this march for a purpose… Mullets unite!!!
