Default Cutler in Favre's mold

Out of fairness to the kid, there will be no more comparing Jay Cutler to John Elway.

It was starting to get silly. Elway is in the Hall of Fame with two Super Bowl rings. Cutler has played seven NFL games. The kid doesn't need it.

So for today's topic, let's bring in Javon Walker and measure Cutler against the Green Bay Packers' Brett Favre.

Why not? Walker caught passes for both quarterbacks.

With Favre in 2004, Walker had 89 receptions for 1,382 yards. With Cutler two games into the 2007 season, Walker is tied for the NFL lead with 17 catches and his 220 receiving yards rank sixth.

So Javon, who throws with more pure velocity, Cutler or Favre?

"Oh, man," Walker said, not really wanting to choose. "Favre's got some heat. Did you watch the Packer highlights this week? Did you watch that touchdown to (Donald) Driver in the back of the end zone? See, that's not a timing route. He just wound up and whipped it. He has that."

Let's put it another way so people can relate. If Favre throws 100 mph, how hard does Cutler throw?

"Maybe 95," Walker said. "Favre has a different technique. Favre will use his whole body."

At this point, Walker got up from his locker chair and demonstrated Favre's passing stance. Ball up to the ear.

"His leg will swing across after he throws," Walker said. "He swings his whole body into his throw. They've always said if you're a kid growing up, don't watch Brett. Because his technique is not what you want to teach. But he's been doing it for so long he still puts the ball in places as if he had perfect technique."

All those youngsters at home also shouldn't wing it from the back foot, as the gunslinging Favre has been known to do. The gunslinger Cutler does that, too. Favre has not only completed more passes than any quarterback in NFL history, he has completed more passes most other quarterbacks wouldn't dare try. Cutler is Favre-like in that he's not afraid to try.

When Cutler came out of Vanderbilt for the 2006 draft, he drew more comparisons to Favre than any other quarterback. They both share the same agent, "Bus" Cook. When Favre was younger, he was a dropback quarterback who moved well from the pocket. Cutler is young now. He's a dropback quarterback who can run the option.

Otherwise, Cutler, like every other quarterback, must defer. Favre is the NFL's only three-time MVP. Every time he completes a pass, it's a new NFL record. He brings 5,073 into this week's game against San Diego. Cutler has 127 completions, although that's 30 more than Favre had after his seventh game.

Last week, Favre got his 149th victory to pass Elway as the NFL's all-time winningest quarterback. Although it says here Favre, nor any other quarterback, ever topped Elway's fastball. If Cutler throws 95 and Favre hits 100, then Elway hummed it at 108 mph.

When it came to velocity, Elway was the Nolan Ryan of NFL quarterbacks.

Next up for the active Packer legend is the rest of Dan Marino's records. The first to fall will be Marino's record of 420 touchdown passes. Favre only needs four more to break it. If the Chargers go up early and big Sunday, Favre may reach the 56 attempts needed to become the league's all-time chucker.

The final significant record will require another season of Favre coming back after contemplating retirement. He is 3,369 passing yards shy of Marino's 61,361.

Cutler is nowhere near any of those marks, but like Favre, he is 2-0 going into Sunday's games, where at halftime the Broncos will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their first Super Bowl triumph.

That win came against Favre's Packers. Wouldn't it be something if 10 years later, Favre met the Broncos again in the Super Bowl, this time with Cutler as the opposing quarterback. The NFL could have worse scenarios.

I hope he can stay healthy like Farve did. With out the drug addiction.

Bad comparison. Let's hope he doesn't have so many two, three, and four interception games as Favre.

I think Cutler has too many weapons early in his career and a coach who pulls the strings too closely to ever get up to a four INT game like Favre had multiple times early in his career.

As for the heat that Javon is talking about... thats funny. I thought Jay's brought the heat many times and Walker hasn't been ready for it... look how many drops he has through the early part of the season and preseason. He's had a bunch.

OTOH, Cutler has also threaded a couple passes into some ugly spots for Walker...that last drive I believe in Buffalo led to Walker getting leveled .

Walker is grabbing them though. He's doing his part to develop trust with Jay.

I think its fair to compare him like that. If anything we should be happy that they compare our QB from last years draft to a guy like Farve.

A comparison we don't need.

Hopefully Jay will not have to get credit for only half a career, living on past reputation and hang on for records.

BTW, what season is this for Favre? I know they hype meter is out on the record thing now, but why is the win record only regular season? I don't get it...Marino needed an extra season to get within one of Elway.

To his credit, Favre only deferred to Elway in terms of talent. he was pretty defiant about Marino, though.
