Default Belicheat is upset!!! Watch out

BELICHICK, PATS PISSED OFF

Profootballtalk.com

Though there still could be some more consequences down the road from last week's spy scandal, the controversy that arose last week -- and the media scrutiny that it caused -- has had a significant effect on the franchise.

As one league insider explained it on Monday afternoon, "[Coach Bill] Belichick is pissed, and he wants to go undefeated."

After trashing two of the other five 2006 AFC playoff teams by the identical score of 38-14 on consecutive Sundays, the Patriots clearly have the talent to run the table. A storm of accusations arising from past tactics is giving Belichick all the incentive that he needs to aim for a 16-0, and all the ammo he'd require to get the troops appropriately motivated.

The on-field leader of the troops already is on board with the chip-on-the-shoulder routine, as evidenced by his Monday comments on WEEI radio in Boston. According to the Boston Herald, quarterback Tom Brady lashed out at the critics, calling any suggestion that he received advance information "absurd."

"By no means am I sitting here getting plays and getting defenses and checking plays based on defenses that I'm getting. That's completely absurd," Brady said. "If that was the case, I think that's just ridiculous. You know, I hear other players, based on what I've heard on television, that 'Brady's getting defenses.' I'm saying, 'That's just ridiculous.'

"But like I said, we pick our battles, and the ones that we are most capable of fighting are the ones we play. Rather than respond with words, we respond through actions. It was a long week because you hear this, but at the same time, people will see."

Apart from the possibility that the Pats will ride the "us against the world" train long enough to bogart the bubbly from the members of the 1972 Dolphins, we think that Belichick or Brady or someone needs to explain exactly what the purpose of videotaping the defensive signals was, if Brady is telling the truth.

Then again, it could be that Brady was only ever told what plays to run and/or which defenders to watch for; such an approach prevents players from knowing too much about the shenanigans, and helps to perpetuate within the locker room the notion that the coaches are super-geniuses.

Too Bad the Broncos are not on the regular season schedule. We would put an end to his talk!!!

Where did you find this?

It's pretty stupid for anyone to be speculating on 16-0 after week 2. Going undefeated is only partly about talent (a small part, really). The rest takes a lot of luck. A lot of great teams have played since the '72 Dolphins. None have gone undefeated.

On top of that, I am really beginning to hate the Patriots.

Well, duh. Not only that, but players get cut/traded all the time. Why would Belicheat want them to spill the beans once they've left NE?

Plausible deniability. No doubt Belicheat learned that from his Navy dad.

Like Dom said, 16-0 is a lot of luck. There have been great teams that couldn't do it. Some people thought that the '73 Dolphins were better than the '72 team, even though they lost 2 games in '73. You won't find very many people who will even say that the '72 Dolphins are the greatest ever. So there are greater teams who couldn't pull it off. I just don't see it happening.

Looking at the Pats schedule, it would be tough to go 16-0. At Indy, at B'More, at Dallas, and home against the Steelers. And remember, now a days it is not a surprise to see a below average team beat a really good team. It happens more often today than it did 10 years ago.

Well, that makes total sense. I wasn't coming down on you for not posting the link. I was just curious as to what reputable journalist would write it.

Now that I've read that this came from PFT, I'll just ignore it. Like I've always said, they are nothing more than a tabloid.

The Patriots and the Colts look like they are head and shoulders above every other team in the league. I know it's early, but as impressive as they've looked, I can see why someone would make this claim. There isn't a single weakness on their team...maybe their running game.

I'd love for them to go 16 and 0 and lose to us in the playoffs.

who needs a run game anymore you have to be Champ Bailey in order to cover receivers now a days with all the rules and limitations.

Or lose to the TB Buc's in the superbowl led by an unretired Jake Plummer fresh off his Greater Idaho Mens Handball 2nd place 2007 finish.

The Colts would have probably lost to the Titans if that guy catches that pass on third down. They certainly don't look head and shoulders above the rest of the league to me. (they beat the Saints who just got crushed by TB on sunday...)

The Patriots do look good though, but they look good every year.

Wanting to go 16-0 doesn't change the fact that the Barriots and Belicheat have a history of cheating.

I suspect the real reason why their pissed off is because they got caught cheating and Goodel is now cracking the whip.

So Brady's upset that people are talking? That's what happens when your head coach is a cheat.

Yeah, but that happens all the time. Do they look better than some of the Steelers teams of the 70's? Or the '85 Bears? Or the '89 49ers? What about even the '98 Broncos? None of those teams finished undefeated.

It happens every year. The example I always think of is a personal one. A few years ago, the Colts played the Ravens in prime time on the opening weekend of the season. Dwight Freeney ended up having one of the most dominating games I've ever seen. He was so good, Jonathan Ogden - arguably the best LT in the league for much of the previous decade - ended up with three or four false start penalties, trying to anticipate the rush. I remember thinking, "There is no way this guy isn't going to set the single-season sack record this year. He looks as quick as Lawrence Taylor in his prime."

He ended up with 11 sacks.

The NFL season is a marathon. Finishing undefeated is like tightrope-walking in a hurricane. It's going to happen again at some point, but it's impossible to predict who will do it.

It's also about having a really easy schedule.

The Dolphins went undefeated in '72 playing one of the easiest schedules in history.

The '98 Broncos and '98 Vikings both made runs at 16-0, and they had the two easiest schedules in the league that year.

If you look at any team that's even come close to 16-0, you'll find that they had an easy schedule. That's something the Patriots don't have this year.
