Default Power Rankings: Message Board Fodder

Yeah, they dont mean crap. We all know, But they make for good discussion:

ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/powerranking
8 The Broncos' offense has produced 911 yards in the first two games but just three touchdowns to show for it. Of course, the Broncos should probably be 0-2 but instead are 2-0 after a couple of dramatic late-game moments.

CBS Sportsline
http://sportsline.com/nfl/powerrankings
5 They made it interesting against the Raiders, but somehow found a way. That's the good news. The bad news is they let Oakland back in. They need to make the kill shot.

Fox Sports
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/powerRankings
8 The Broncos are now 2-0, with both wins coming on Jason Elam game-winning boots on the final play of the game. Though the ending wasn't as dramatic as Week 1 at Buffalo, Sunday's win didn't come without its own share of suspense. Denver called a timeout with 11:13 left in overtime, just seconds before Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski nailed a 52-yard field goal that appeared to be the game-winner for the Raiders. The timeout was granted, Janikowski had to kick again, then banged the attempt off the left upright. Denver responded with an impressive game-winning drive, capped off by a Jason Elam 20-yard boot. Travis Henry surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second straight week and Jay Cutler was cool down the stretch. Cutler's not John Elway. But at 2-0, Broncos fans are more than happy with their current quarterback situation.

The Sporting News (via Yahoo)
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_yl...=tsn&type=lgns
5 If the vote were taken today, Jason Elam would be the Broncos' MVP.

Elam would NOT be MVP, his missed kicks are why it went down to the wire. I'd rather he just make them in the 3rd quarter and let the game wind down.

Can't disagree with the victim or the rankings. Elam has been money, at times, but he is also screwing the betting odds with misses during the less dramatic, but important parts of the games. Like when there are scoring chances.

Alternatively, finishing the drives with TDs would relieve the dramatics. Perhaps the O's funny stuff is out of their system this week.

I don't give a rat's arse about the rankings except that it is nice to see the "National Media" boys are as disdainful of the mullets as I am.

Great minds think alike......

I'm more comfortable with the #8s than the #5s right now. I think we're all in agreement that we'll have a much better sense of exactly what the Broncos are made of in about three weeks.

Steelers

ahead of my Broncos so far. We have a lot of improvement needed before we are a top 5 team. We have one more sub .500 team to get things straight.

No, the Broncos are not a top 5 team. But what are you smoking? Redskins? CARDINALS? Geez...those last 5 are not better than us.

And I think its amazing how much the places love the Steelers. They've killed 2 weak teams and now they are a top 5 team. Lets see how they do against some real teams...

Cowboys (Ugh. Totally overrated, but this will even out soon enough. Still the best in the NFC right now, though)

They have the AFC West as follows.

ESPN
4. Chargers
8. Broncos
30. Raiders
31. Chiefs

CBS Sportsline
5. Denver
6. Chargers
29. Raiders
32. Chiefs

Fox Sports
3. Chargers (Way too high)
7. Broncos
28. Raiders
30. Chiefs

Yahoo!
5. Denver
6. Chargers
30. Oakland
31. Chiefs

So far, others agree that the Chiefs are challenging Oakland for the basement. The scheme in Oakland is a good one. They actually have an offense that is good and their QB is good as well. Their line and rushing attack, especially when used with their solid defense, will keep them in games all year. The Chiefs have literally no offense, below average special teams and a defense that can be exposed.

I think the Oakland Running game looked better than it is against Denver. No doubt that Jordan ran hard and got some yards, but there was also a few holes caused by the 8-in-the-box screw ups by the LBs. So. I would contend that the Faiders' O is still suspect.

People say the Steelers are suspect because they beat up on weak teams. Well, the same argument can be used with the Denver rankings. And I don't think the sparkies are a top five team, either......

Don't worry, though. These don't mean a damm thing beyond the placements of the mullets and the faiders........

But the chefs have HOTCARL and Herm. "What happens in the lockerroom STAYS in the lockerroom."

How long before Herm drags out the Us against them mentality?

That won't work either because the mullets have been in that mode for a long time....

Mullets usually crap all over themselves badly when they implode.

I don't care about the rankings. I prefer to be ranked lower and let teams and fans think that we aren't that good.

I tell you what, I dont think that the Chargers are much to worry about this year for the big dogs of the AFC. They looked average on Sunday night, and that's not something that comes with excuse. They were missing a couple of guys, but as a whole they bring back the same team they had last year.

Who knew that Norv Turner could instill such averageness in a team packed with that many good players?

I wouldn't put Oakland as low as they are on some of these rankings. Eventhough they are 0-2 you can tell they are a better team. They pretty much have more points than they score all of last season I would definitley rank them higher than KC, Buff, Miami, ATL, Cleveland, and probably even the Jets and Giants right now.

I'm getting tired of the "we should be 0-2" argument. We won those games and deserved to win just as much as Buffalo or Oakland would have.

They make it sound like it would have been a great win for those teams, but we're "lucky". Deal. We're 2-0 and we deserve to be.

In all actuality, those teams were very fortunate to even be in the game. Both games were dominated by the Broncos for the most part.

Looks like sporting news only watches espn highlights. 3 missed field goals that would have not put us in those last second wins. You are correct, he isnt our MVP. REP!

I have expressed my concerns about the Broncos, but I wouldn't put half of those teams ahead of the Broncos. Especially the bottom four. That's a joke.

FOr fun, I am including the DVOA ratings. These are based off some complex, mythicalesque formulae that Aaron Schatz, a Cheatriot homer, developed in conjunction with some other schmucks that hate Denver. (Their words).

Football Outsiders DVOA
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/200...rankings/5492/
[code]
6 Denver (Off 28th, Def 1st, ST 31st).

Lots of comments are puzzled at the offensive ranking at 28th considering individually our players are consistently ranked among the top 10, but as a team we apparently suck offensively, despite the yardage totals.

This rating system, if you are not familiar with it, gets more accurate as the year progresses (duh, so do most of them as we get a better judge of who sucks and who doesnt). It is a pretty accurate measure the teams though about 4 games in. Not perfect, far from it, but probably the best attempt to measure NFL teams via mathematics.

No way should the RAvens, Cardinals should be ahead of the Broncos but you really can't argue with the rest. Let's wait until week 6 and see where the Broncos are at.... Or maybe just wait until they play the Colts.
