Default John Unitas

This might interest some here. Read the article that goes along with the video. It provides some insight into the MAN. His son Chad looks like his dad.

I was scared when I opened this thread that it was going to be a "Jay Cutler looks like a young Johnny Unitas" thread.

Thanks moot.

Most here aren't old enough to remember Unitas. He was the best of his era.

Baltimore actually had training camp in Golden a couple of years. Unitas' wife is from Golden. She was a waitress in the bar where the Colts hung out during camp.

I consider myself quite fortunate. I was born in Baltimore and as a young kid got to see Unitas play a few times in person. My first NFL year I really remember bits and pieces was 1965. I think that was the year Unitas and backup QB Cuozzo shared a hospital room and halfback Tom Matte filled in and wore the plays on his arm and almost beat the Packers to advance. I moved to Colorado before I became a teenager, 1971 and got to experience the Broncos go from pretty poor to 1977 and beyond. I remember a considerable amount about Unitas (he and Brooks Robinson were my boyhood heros) and then got experience to Elway.

Unitas was a blue collar man, not aloof and absolutely loved by the City of Baltimore. He returned that love when he told Indianapolis to take his records off the books when the team left Baltimore. He integrated with the man on the street. He was full of grit and tough as nails. No one will ever convince me anyone was a better QB. It is amazing what money can do to athletes today.

If I were to make a list of the greatest QBs ever, I would have Unitas and Elway tied for the top spot. Totally different players, but equally important to their teams and their era. I never saw him in person but remember seeing him on TV all of the time. BTW - that Matte performance was an incredible story.

John Unitas was my first football hero. I was in 6th grade and everyone else liked Roger Staubach. (And that was in Pueblo). No me, I liked the old guy with the hightops and flat top hair cut. Happiest day of my life at the time was when mom brought home a pack of football cards with Johnny Unitas on the top. Wish I had that card now.
